How to run xbmc headless?

Mon Jun 29, 2015 12:36 pm

I've installed xbmc on my Pi (model B), and use it to play music on my stereo downstairs. The TV is right next to the stereo, so I simply put on a playlist and then unplug the HDMI to use it 'headless' (without a monitor).
I now want to move the system upstairs - but I have no monitor up there, and no way of getting one up there. How can I get my playlist going without a monitor?
I tried meltwater's guide to a Direct Network Connection, and it worked fine with rasbian. Is there any way to do the same with xbmc?
Alternatively, could I just plug in a keyboard and get the music going?

Have the RPi boot without a graphical interface. Create an automatic script to monitor GPIO lines, and use a couple of buttons to START|STOP your playlist and(or) shutdown the PI.

Or you could just download the Yatse app onto your phone and do it that way.

Turns out it can be done with just the keyboard - just practice with a monitor first, and write down what order to press the keys in. It's like entering a cheat code!
