Auto desktop switching

Fri Jun 26, 2015 12:56 am

I'm considering a project with my pi2 to hook it up with a 15 in monitor and use it as a slide show of live apps.

Weather
calendar
nagios network monitor
maybe news

I have a few possible ideas how to do it but not 100% sure they will work or how to go about them so was looking for some feed back on my ideas.

1, get each application maximised in vurtual desktops and get it to rotate through.

2, try and find a way to say alt tab through the windows.

3, put a touch screen on the pi and set up buttons on it so i can move between the apps or virtual desktops manually.

Any ideas or experience with anything that could help me would be fantastic and very much appreciated.

using a touchscreen would probably not be the best idea cause you are going to have to have the screen on the touch screen or the monitor, not both. Using some simple buttons that are connected via gpio would be much easier.

I setup multiple desktops (4) on one of my RPi units and I rotate through them with the scroll wheel on my logitech blue marble. Each click of the mouse scroll wheel advances to the next desktop. The downside of this approach is that the mouse must be 'over' an exposed portion of each desk... if one of the apps is maximized the mouse scroll stops working... easy to work with, and simple though.
