Licensing and distributing a raspberry pi platform

Tue Jun 23, 2015 5:43 pm

Hello,

I am creating a video streaming platform using the Raspberry Pi. I have wrote software that captures video and streams it to a server using OpenCV. The client then can monitor the video feed using a computer, or smartphone. OpenCV uses the FreeBSD license, and my code is running on Raspbian, a Debian distrobution, using the raspberry pi 2.

Is it legal for me to sell the whole unit as a system with the bundled software included, and distribute this product I made using the raspberry pi to shops and other people that want to monitor their home/store?

From what I've researched Debian and Raspberry Pi are using the GPL license. If I provide source code to the video streaming app I created, will I then be able to distribute and sell my system as a whole?

What legal grounds do I need to adhere by to make sure that is legal for me to sell my raspberry pi system and software bundled with it to others?

If someone with experience reselling a raspberry pi system, or an official from Raspberry Pi foundation could respond to this question I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

• Don't like the board ? Missing features ? Change to the prosilver theme ! You can find it in your settings.
• Don't like to search the forum BEFORE posting 'cos it's useless ? Try googling : yoursearchtermshere site:raspberrypi.org

If you want an 'official' response from the Raspberry Pi Foundation, see https://www.raspberrypi.org/trademark-rules/ and use the contact address given there.

Are you forced (by any means) to advertise your product as a RPI based solution?
The trademark owners are affraid of others trying to benefit from the trademark. As long as you only refer RPI in the license, for example, IMHO no need for any additional permissions.
The situation is totally different if you start selling something like "The Raspberry pi media box", obviously.

thank you for the responses. I was contacted by raspberry pi foundation and they said:
We cannot provide legal advice, but our understanding is that it is legal to distribute the Raspbian image as-is. Note that special terms apply to the use of Java in "non-general purpose compute" platforms such as kiosks; we do not believe this applies in this case.
So for my purposes, there should be no licensing problems.
