"supervised user" web browser??

Sat Jun 20, 2015 1:19 pm

Hi. I just bought 4 Pi 2 Model B's, and was hoping to use them to replace my kids' Windows XP machines. However, I have not been able to install the Chrome web browser that has the "supervised user" capability. I would like to control where my kids go on the internet, and a white list method would be my preference. Does anyone know how that could be done on a Pi 2 Model B? Thanks, and please accept my apologies if this question has already been answered - I looked for it for a few days, and did not see anything.

The raspberry pi is not a desktop replacement, it's great for learning though.

You can install any of the Ubuntu flavors that are available and download Chromium from them, that version of chromium supports extensions. It may support supervised user, but I don't know what that is.

Amazing how much difference there is in meaning between "super user" and "supervised user".

Both MS and RedHat would be proud.
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

The RPi uses an ARM CPU and would not consider it a direct replacement for an X86 CPU Desktop PC.

You could of bought used Windows 7 PC's for a similar price point.

Yes you can use a RPi as a replacement but not out-of-the-box, it take a lot of patience and tweaking and compromise.

Raspbian the defacto Operating System is based off Debian Linux.

Bottom line the RPi is a great learning tool and if you can convince your kids that there is more to computers than mouse pointy click and social media they will be eductionally richer.
Rather than negativity think outside the box !

Thanks very much for the input. I had kind of suspected that I was expecting too much from it, but did not want to give up too easily. My kids are 6 years old, so probably best to put the Pis away for a couple years, until they want to learn Python or something.

Thanks again for your insight and advice!!

You could set up your own proxy server running squidguard or similar with whitelist then they can use any browser as long as it's pointed at the proxy - at least until they get a little older and wiser and can outsmart you ;)

Ha! That is another great idea - we'll see how long it takes for me to give up the contest!

Thanks!!
