Please recommend a wireless adaptor

Mon Jun 01, 2015 2:08 am

So I went to Maplins and asked for a wireless adaptor that works with a Raspberry Pi. Apparently, the one I got can be made to work after a lot of fiddling. That's not what I want.

This page (http://elinux.org/RPi_USB_Wi-Fi_Adapters) lists a number of adapters that are described as "preinstalled", but I don't want to assume that means I can just plug it in and go.

Can anyone please recommend a wireless adapter that I can just plug in and that's it? I'm not bothered about speed or cost.

Thanks in advance.

The only one that is officially supported, is the official wifi adapter from the swag store, and that is NOT the same one as the one from canakit.

However, Raspbian probably contains drivers for several WiFi chipsets, but you mileage may vary with those.

both are using the same broadcom chip, so what is actually supported (officially) is any wifi adapter based on that broadcom chip.
The BCM43143.

This one: http://shop.pimoroni.com/products/usb-h ... fi-adaptor appears to be based on the same Broadcom chipset.

You made the mistake of thinking I'd bother to follow your link before posting.

I bought whatever was cheapest (and smallest) at DeaExtreme. It worked.

LOL, the only one officially supported is a complete nightmare. Used to be you needed fwcutter and/or NDIS wrapper to make a Broadcom WiFi card work.

I think I'm going to switch to Debian for ARM since "officially" it supports everything.

in September 2014 the RPF Raspbian Operating System included support for BCM43143,

I do not know if supported in other Linux Distro's without additional firmware, but details here:

I'm using EDUP Wireless USB Nano card EP-N8508GS and it was plug-and-play with Python OS.
However, if you are planning to experiment with Windows 10 IoT Core, I suggest you stick to the Official Raspberry Pi WiFi dongle to save you some headaches later. See the link below for the supported WiFi adapters have been tested on Windows 10 IoT Core:
