What software to use for personal cloud project?

Fri May 29, 2015 7:39 pm

Hey,

I want to set up one of those web servers or personal clouds on my pi. I need to be able to download files on my external hard-drive from the internet, and being able to stream music and videos would be nice. Access from a mobile device and playlist support would also be great, but that's getting picky.

It seems like there are a lot of software options out there. I've seen

Nimbus
Tonido
Owncloud
arkOS

and also thought about making my own website or webapp. What approach do you guys recommend? Advice from people with experience?

Thanks a lot,
Ethan

Hey Ethan,

I personally prefer Nimbus because I wrote it :) It's very easy to setup and does support playlists but mobile usability isn't so great yet.

Feel free to check out the demo, and if you end up giving it a shot I would love to hear your feedback!

I used my raspi to build a NAS for my household, and now run BTSync as well for a personal cloud solution. I am able to run BTsync on my android tablet, laptop, and phones to keep everything sync'd up and to transfer files. There are many solutions available, research them all and decide which one suits your needs the best.

This is an all in one image that would be another good place to start besides nimbus.

I think I'm going to start with Nimbus, since it seems like the easiest to set up. Going to give it a go this weekend and I'll see how I like it.

Thx for the input guys
