I neglected to mention that this happens when connected to HMDI and when connected
using VGA cable with HMDI to VGA converter.

There are lots of threads about the playing of YouTube vids on the Pi.

You should search around for them, and read what they have to say. In fact, I myself, started one a few days ago.

The short summary is: You'll never get it to work as easily and seamlessly as it does on your desktop Windows PC, but you'll have lots of fun trying.

P.S. What method did you use to try to play it? A browser? VLC? Something else?
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

(One of the best lines I've seen on this board lately)

Rpi2 B

Youtube seems AOK in OpenElec

Youtube in Raspbian is best in kweb browser, though IceWeasel Browser is "watchable"

Youtube should default to HTML5 in Web Browsers, you can check here https://www.youtube.com/html5

When using HDMI the audio is in there too. Does your converter extract that and give an analogue audio output? If not you need to force the audio to come from the RPi 3.5 mm jack. Google for that.

I am not 100% sure about this yet, but my understanding, is that video playback is not optimized within the desktop OS.and the only player that would be is omxplayer. As for browser or other video apps, it would be slow and chunky at best.

I don't know about MATE, but it worked under Ubuntu Linaro.
