Where does one find a general overview and system use for something one can use to make any thing work with looking all over the network for little parts of this or that?

If you are looking for an introductory book, there are a number available - Gareth Halfacres are good, as is Carrie-Anne's Adventures in Raspberry Pi.

But the the whole system is so extensive there isn't really a book that covers it all.
