Can't log on but can samba and http

Tue Apr 28, 2015 3:52 am

I use xrdp to log onto my pi from a windows pc.
After a power fail reboot I can't complete a log in.

Connection Log says:
connecting to sesman....
sesman connect ok
sending login to sesman
xrdp_mm_process_login_response:login successful for display
started connecting
connected to 127.0.0.1 5910
tcp connected error - problem connecting

I can access the pi filesystem via samba and the pi web server is running ok.

Is there a way to get in and fix this or do I have to scrap and rebuild an image ?
thx
Ian

You should be able to ssh into the Raspberry Pi, unless you have disabled SSH. This will give you a command line. Then you can have a look at the xrdp logs or reinstall xrdp.

...failing that, you could always just connect a keyboard and monitor and login that way. Easier than a rebuild anyway.

ssh is actively refused.

Connecting monitor results in the start up log being scrolled up the screen but the screen clears part way through (probably at the end) and the screen then stays blank.(and no mouse visible).

If I hold shift during boot it goes into recovery but the dialog box saying please wait never disappears. The mouse works and I can mouse over the options and click them to get to edit config for example.

Any suggestions on a way forward?
Thx Ian

If you can't get in via a keyboard/monitor attached to the Raspberry Pi, then you will probably need to re-image your SD/microSD card. It may be damaged and may need replacing.

If you have data that you want to retrieve, then you can mount the card on another Linux system via a card reader. Alternatively, get another SD card and create a new image on that. Once it is up and running plug your card reader (with original SD card) into your Raspberry Pi and mount the filesystem and retrieve your data that way.

Thanks for responding. I can see and access my files via samba so that isn't an issue.
Aah well rebuild it is :(((

Oh yes, I forgot you said that samba and your webserver were working. I am really surprised that you can't get in via a keyboard attached to your Raspberry Pi. Does your Raspberry Pi normally boot to the Desktop?

Yep, boots to desktop - normally. That would seem to be what it is trying to do and getting stuck.
The shift-key recovery mode takes me to a desktop screen with working mouse...

When it gets stuck, try pressing ctrl-alt-f2 and see if you get a login prompt.

Ok, just tried that no effect. But looking closely at the messages it displays during the boot this time I have spotted a fsck fail so I am guessing that there is a filesystem error.:(
