Resizing the root partition

Mon Jul 09, 2012 7:09 pm

Hi,

I recently noticed that my raspberry pi only has a 1.6gb root partition, and after a few packages being installed there is almost no space left whatsoever to install any more.
What I was wondering was whether or not it was possible to resize this partition to take up the extra 5.6gb of unallocated space on the SD card without having to reformat, or whether or not its possible to just install new packages to a new 5.6gb partition on the SD card.
Have been battling this problem for a few days and no windows program wants to allow me to increase the size of this root partition.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Matt

Instructions on how to do this can be found at http://elinux.org/RPi_Resize_Flash_Partitions . The end gives you a method that can be used to do it in-situ on the Pi.

As of 8/1/2012 (possibly earlier), the auto config in wheezy makes this as simple as picking a menu option, no need to do anything more. Image the SD card, boot, pick the option, reboot machine.

2012-8-1 would be a world usable "purely numeric" date expression. However, I do understand the protest about ambiguous dates. ON the other hand, *no*one* was talking about Wheezy in January as far as I recall...

Since at this time there's only two dates for the Wheezy and the first is the beta it's a little hard to get confused.

Later on we will probably have a release letter like Wheezy "c"...... till then I wouldn't worry. ;)
