Looks like your PSU might be dead?
If the light on the power supply is merely a LED across its output, then it going out means the PSU cannot supply as much current as the Pi is asking for: this could be because the Pi has died as is looking like a short circuit, or the PSU has developped a fault which is shutting it down.

Try a different PSU (or a different Pi) - that'll tell you which has died.

Thanks fairly sure it is the pi as i tried to power it from my desktops usb with no joy, also tried a 400ma power supply which i realise is not powerful enough to run video but it is not even turning on the red power
led. The problem is I bought this "secondhand" (originally from farnell/element14) so I a having trouble getting things like order numbers etc. for returning. In fairness to the seller it worked fine when i got it first. I put a call in to farnell tech support and was promised a callback but so far no joy, I hope this isn't indicative of their customer support. will let eeryone know how i get on

If your PSU's led goes out when you plug in the -RPI, it means there is a (near) short somewhere on the R-PI. Try it with as few things plugged into the board as possible.

My first thought is that maybe D17 has burned out, due to an overvoltage on the input, but could be many things on the board, check if any of the voltage regulators (or D17) gets extremely hot.

My pi has the power light come on, but then quickly fades out.
I tried unplugging everything but i think the short is with the power supply, the voltage reg does get pretty warm.
Now it's not turning on at all.
Element14 won't give us the password to get in and contact them either (forgot it)
I'd just started to get raspbmc working how i wanted it too, very annoyed at this.

Hi.
I have a Rpi from elements14 that yesterday I tried to use and I will not even get a red light.
Component D17 gets extrem hot.

I had it for at two a months and did some tests with no more than 4 days use in total.

My Son also received a Rpi a few weeks ago and he uses it most days. That is working fine.

So I tested the USB power from his and on mine but no joy.
Mine is faulty voltage regulator for sure. Shame as it have very little use so far as I was just getting ready to use it again for a many for programming.
Will contact elements14 today to see what they say and how long for repair or replacement.

Quick update,

Emailed element14's au-sales (Australia), and they gave me everything i needed to return and get it replaced, including credit for the original. Will take 2-3 weeks, but the UK's a long way away.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised with how good the customer service was.
