VideoTroubleshooting Starting Point

Mon Apr 06, 2015 2:56 am

I believe I have a model B (Ethernet, Standard size SD-Card, 2 USB ports + RCA NTSC jack), that has it's HDMI video fading in and out. The device has over a year of stable performance and was playing a video perfectly when the video started cutting out. Flashes of white 'static' precede the video dropping out. Troubleshooting steps performed include:

* swapping power supplies
* verifying that TV HDMI port is good
* swapping out SD card (video still cuts out)

The video and sound cuts-out whether it is displaying the XBMC / Kodi menu, playing a video or playing music.

System is running KODI, however, the other SD card tested is running a different distro and cuts out. The drop-out behavior started in the middle of a movie tonight and is new.

Questions:
1) has anyone seen this issue?
2) what tests can be performed to identify the issue?

Actionable diagnostic suggestions are appreciated: Thank you.

First thing to do is to test your power supply. If you have access to a multi-meter you can measure the voltage yourself (here is a video showing you how).

If the supply is ok, you can try and increase the config_hdmi_boost setting in config.txt.

Thank you: good suggestions.

Although I do not have a DVM because I'm on vacation, I tried two different 1.5A sources and realized I have a PowerAdd USB sourcing 2.0A, It seems that this device can play music (.mp3), whereas the other two power supplies experience dropout of video and sound. Video has fewer dropouts. It has been my experience that 1.5A sources are more than enough to stream movies and music from a local wired NAS. Now the music is experiencing dropouts. Aye Caramba!

I'll report more when I acquire a DVM.

If you are using a power supply and separate (USB -> microUSB) cable, make sure you try a different cable. Many people on this forum have found their power issues are caused by the cable rather than the supply.

The power supply is known to be good: http://www.amazon.com/Charger-Adapter-P ... =Anker+USB

Replacing the HDMI seemed to solve the problem. I should have known better to try changing out the simple items first.

Many thanks to those who contributed to this thread :)
