Raspbian firmware is not upgrading kernel with rpi-update

Mon Mar 30, 2015 8:24 pm

I am a new user, and I have two PI 2 boards and I've issued the rpi-update command to the first one and it has been upgraded to the newest firmware with kernel 3.18.10 v7 with no problem, and so is my other pi which was successfully upgraded except for the kernel which is still 3.18.7 v7and when I send the rpi-update commend again it says that it's already up-to-date which is not because the kernel is old and here is the command line on my second pi that has the problem:
pi@raspberrypi ~ $ sudo rpi-update
*** Raspberry Pi firmware updater by Hexxeh, enhanced by AndrewS and Dom
*** Performing self-update
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current
Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed
100 8107 100 8107 0 0 14214 0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 20420
*** Relaunching after update
*** Raspberry Pi firmware updater by Hexxeh, enhanced by AndrewS and Dom
*** Your firmware is already up to date
pi@raspberrypi ~ $ uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 3.18.7-v7+ #755 SMP PREEMPT Thu Feb 12 17:20:48 GMT 2015 armv7l GNU/Linux
And one more question, I have installed openelec along with raspbian from noobs and now I wish to uninstall openelec and I don't see any solution to remove it on the forum, any help appreciated, thank you :)

sudo rm /boot/.firm*

Then re-run sudo rpi-update.

That's right, it just worked now :D but, can you tell me what caused the problem and what did sudo rm /boot/.firm* really do, I want to learn.

/boot/.firmware_revision contains an identifier for the currently installed kernel / firmware version (as installed by an earlier rpi-update).
Apparently it was at the latest version :
*** Your firmware is already up to date
'sudo rm /boot/.firm* removes all files starting with '.firm' in /boot/
Now rpi-update can't see what the installed version is and will download / install the latest version.

I see, thank you very much for explanation.
