Best Audio ADC?

Fri Mar 27, 2015 12:22 pm

I need a good quality audio ADC, sampling at least 96kHz, for a project. The Wolfson sound card looks perfect (for this and a load of other applications), but appears to be poorly supported- Is there a better ADC (I need DAC too, but that's less critical, could probably use the onboard for it), or is the Wolfson usable by an experienced linux/hardware person, and does it have a likely long term future?

I'd prefer an add-on board rather than a USB sound card for various reasons, but this looks like the only audio ADC with 96kHz sampling, and looks like an ideal fit for the Pi.

[Edited to swap ADC and DAC, I am looking for an ADC but mistyped the original post!]

Thanks for the answer, but I am looking for an ADC, I accidentally transposed 'DAC' and 'ADC' in my original post (I'll blame 'Fridays'). I have now edited the original post and thread title accordingly...

So, is there a good fast ADC, ideally not USB, which will give me 96kHz, at least 16 bit, at least 2 channel input.

I have one of these working OK on an A+.

But I must say I've not tried it on a PI2 or on a PI1 with the latest kernel as it needs a kernel module building and until I get round to helping update some tools I can't do that.

I compiled your module my_loader.c on a Raspberry Pi B+ under Archlinux 3.18.9 and 3.18.10, they
have a package with kernel headers.
But after insmod it says that bcm2708-i2s.0 is not registered.
If I disable device-tree in config.txt , insmod says dmic-hifi is not registered.
What could I do to use my PCM1803a ?

I have no experience with Arch Linux so I can't say what you may need to do.
As I said I haven't kept this up to date as it is working on the PI that it needs to work on !
Sorry.

You may post the output of lsmod, maybe the reason is that some module is not
loaded, and the newest version number of Linux that you used successfully.
I think thought there should be a module in the kernel for device independent
i2s data input.

I would really be interested in something like this as well. Has anything new been developed? I would particularly love something with 2 XLR inputs.

There's one with 3.5mm Jack inputs.. I think it can be converted to XLR inputs with minimal changes
You could look it up here https://gitlab.com/kakar0t/audiosense-pi

Hey b-ak I hadn't seen that board before when I did my research for my project because it is new. The author of the thread says he wants to use the Wolfson chip - have you seen this board - https://github.com/skiselev/i2s_audio_phat. It uses the WM8731 and the instructions couldn't be any clearer. Shame it hasn't been 'advertised' more.

Apologies, although on the other thread I was specifically giving the OP feedback about the HAT they were talking about making. And the responses on this thread were more valuable!
