HAT Technology

Wed Mar 25, 2015 9:15 am

When the HAT standard was first announced, I braced myself for a flood of groovy, self-configuring add-ons ... which never happened. For example I immediately went hunting for a high-speed ADC, but the ADCs that are available are neither high speed nor HATed (HATish is better, on second thoughts). Sure there are a few HAT-like things floating around, but not the kind of deluge I expected. Is there a problem? Or is it just that HAT technology is over the top for what the majority of users are doing with the Pi?

My point exactly. I have seen these products and they really undersell the presumptive benefits of the HAT concept. I could convert analogs faster with an abacus. Ah well, I guess the market just isn't there. (Edit) on further contemplation, perhaps the problem is that the header only brings out GPIOs - there's no access to address and data buses, as would be needed for peripherals (according to the traditional meaning of the word).

That's a bit narrow minded. You can connect I2C, I2S and SPI peripherals, and with some software trickery you can extend this to include Onewire as well. Together they can get you a long way.

I've been fairly happy with the Pico UPS.

Huh?? What part of thinking out loud is "narrow minded?" I could just go and trash the product on another forum - that would be narrow minded. I half expected a zealot to jump out from behind a bush and smash me with his baseball bat - that has happened before. But a moderator?? Whatever happened to civil debate?

I'm sorry. You're absolutely right - the dictionary definition is awful, and not at all what I meant. Unimaginitive is closer to what I meant, which is that just because you don't have peripherals hanging off the primary bus it doesn't mean you can't do interesting things.

Hmmmm ... "Narrow Minded," generously downgraded to "Unimaginative." And I thought I was doing ok, for a dog. See you over in alt.flame, zealot-boy.
