Stumbled on to this old thread when looking for related resources. I have recently implemented a custom driver to replace rpi-fbcp when interfacing with my ILI9341 controlled PiTFT 2.8" display. This driver operates like rpi-fbcp, and can be found at:
It is not perfect on the power consumption front, but SPI bandwidth utilization is getting quite close to the full extent of the bus.

Hello Juj, thank you for the post and your contribution with fbcp-ili9341... I am receiving "illegal instruction" when try to run your binary under Raspbian "Stretch"... have you had any success with Stretch yet? Thank you. --Chris

Hi cookrx7,

recently when updating the code to work on Pi Zero W, I stumbled on the same, and the cause was due to Pi 3 B CPU specific optimization flags that were being used in https://github.com/juj/fbcp-ili9341/blo ... ts.txt#L20 . Not sure if some of these flags might be OS version specific as well, but you could try commenting that line out to see if that might have an effect. (this was the commit that fixed the Pi Zero W illegal instruction: https://github.com/juj/fbcp-ili9341/com ... 74e52e7fd9)
