Thu Jul 05, 2012 5:53 pm

Please please help, i am a newbie with linux, i have spent two days trying to get video or sound running on the Pi. Started with Debian but no video software and no sound in the music player, Now running Raspbmc which hangs after a few clicks and doesn't seem to have mouse support. Have tried to download omxplayer, but then can't find it or run it, tried the usual sudo apt-get install omxplayer, but to no avail. I have searched and searched but no joy. please help

thanks

You mention a hub in the title but then............ ? It sounds like a power supply problem or maybe an incompatible hub like 99% of Pi problems are.

thanks

but at the moment I have the hub disconnected so only connected via the onboard usb, but my main problem is raspbmx hanging, starts fine allows me a few clicks then hangs, very frustrating, tried debian no video player but works fine for other stuff. I realise that the pi is more of a project than a readymade pc, but two days and no sound or video? I promise I am not a stupid person

sorry maybe I am a stupid person didn't notice the moderator has to approve all posts. Just checked power supply output is 5v 400ma, works fine with debian (but no video player on debian), also noticed that after hanging I eventually get xbmc overlayed with a terminal ,if that makes sense. in other words my keystrokes show up in the background of xbmc

If your power supply is only rated at 400mA then I am not surprised the system 'hangs'. That is well below the recommended minimum of 700mA. Keyboard problems are a typical symptom of insufficient power.

Try powering the Pi with your hub

You mentioned that you haven't been able to get either sound or video working in debian. For the video I suggest VLC sudo apt-get install vlc. As for the sound, the raspi has the sound disabled by default. You can turn this on by first logging in on boot and before you type startx to load the gui type this command into the terminal, sudo modprobe snd_bcm2835 and press enter. Load the gui with startx and sound will be enabled. If you want to load sound everytime you boot up (I can't see why you wouldn't!?) then you will have to edit the module.txt file in the etc folder in the boot menu to include the line snd_bcm2835.

new powersupply rated 2 amps was working fine for a while but now no power at all no red led lighting and nothing on screen. Checked usb cable and power supply, they are happily charging a phone, so am I to assume I have a faulty pi.

thanks
