Torrent Client plus External NAS

Wed Mar 04, 2015 2:41 pm

I have been considering setting up one of my old B's as a low power seedbox for ages and actually bought a a 1tb mini drive to plug into it. On the other hand I have also been considering switching my main desktop to a miniatx build with just OS and game drives and then getting a dedicated NAS server for video and general data. This seems like it would give me better reads than accessing video on the PI's usb drive anyways.

So, if I were to buy a NAS and have the pi write to it, and read to it from windows... How would I want to format it? Does it even matter since it is network storage and not a local drive? Does anyone know a good cost effect NAS chassis to grab for pi use?

On another note, would it be worth using the B2 for it? I feel like it wouldn't need the extra processing and I already have an old B and B+ i could use (plan to get a B2 to move my emulation station over to)

use ext4fs on the NAS

if your home network is gigabit ethernet, get a good NAS box, the Pi 2 B is a pretty good NAS for 100Mbps Ethernet, but not very good on a gigabit Ethernet - for benchmarks, etc see

Read it, and you will see why the Pi 2 cannot be a good gigabit NAS.

It is pretty good at 100Mbps though :)

I actually do everything at home wirelessly currently. I'm a cisco network admin so I have an extra 1142n AP with an injector doing everything. I believe the AT&T modem/router I have is probably only 10/100 though. With everything set to dedicated 5ghz with custom config speeds are pretty good with no need for cabling. It is a good point though if I want to have the pi writing and reading from the NAS and my desktop reading from it as well I may want to atleast wire in the PI. Might even want to get a 1gb switch for the NAS (though it won't really matter if I don't wire other stuff too...)

The PI itself won't be the nas though, just a torrent server. Considering my internet speeds are 25mbps down and about 8 up anything over 100mbps isn't that necessary and I imagine the pi should be able to process a bunch of active torrents at once when only a few are actually actively pushing much data. You think the old B's will be overloaded if I hit it too hard? I do use heatsinks and overclock them to hell just for the fun of it fyi.

Honestly if I convert my desktop into a miniatx that uses less power and have the NAS running there isn't much point in using the PI at all, but I have two extras, might as well use them for something!
