Couple Questions? (PiGlow, Usb hub)

Sun Mar 01, 2015 4:14 am

Okay just ordered most of everything I think I need To start. This will be my first ever Pi. I am looking to use it as a way to ease into doing some server hosting? Like a media server or minecraft server. I also plan to mess around with the Retropi stuff.

I ordered a Raspberry Pi 2 B CanaKit http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008XV ... UTF8&psc=1
A better case http://www.adafruit.com/products/2347

A better Mini SD card. (32Gb speed rating 10) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IEY ... UTF8&psc=1

Then I decided It would be cool if there was some sort of decorative lighting. I didnt know if there was a pre assembled lighting accessory but someone on reddit suggested PiGlow. I checked it out it looks awesome. Does anyone know if this works with the Pi 2? And is it hard to set up? Do I have to run command line every start up to get it to start?

PiGlow http://www.ebay.com/itm/PiGlow-the-LED- ... 972282928?

Also sense I plan on doing a media server of some sort or even a minecraft server. I kind of assumed I would just plug in my 500gb external hard drive. But I seen in a video last night that I would have to get a powered usb hub? I am not sure what to get or how that works. I would plug the HD into the hub then there would be a usb from the hub to the pi? Then a separate power supply?

This one? http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/83-15544

Thanks in advance.

Yes, maybe it was indigestible and noone could answer everything.

Also for knowledgeable users in the UK there have been several weekend events that might have taken their attention and spare time.

I'll try to contribute to the PiGlow part of this.
So:
Do you have to INSTALL the piglow software each time? No.
Do you have to RUN software to control the lights each time you want to use it? Yes.
Can that software be run automatically when the system starts up? Yes.
Can it be used with an RPi2B? Yes. (But some of the earlier tutorials will not be accurate for the more recent OS support related to the RPi2.)

There's no reason why a PiGlow won't run on a RPi2B, except that the python RPi.GPIO and smbus needed an update to run on the new hardware. The hardware fits on the top 26 pins on the RPi2B 40 pin header.

If you run the 2015-02-16 NOOBS 1.4 (or plain Raspbian) it should "just work".
