kernel.img and kernel7.img?

Sat Feb 21, 2015 3:03 am

Hello,

On my /boot partition I have 2 files named kernel*.img.
How can I know which one i'm currently running ? (I need to delete the other one for space reasons):
Thanks for your help. Under my config.txt and the $ ls -ls /boot

Cheers,
Mat

Code: Select all

pi@rp /boot $ more config.txt |grep kernel
kernel=linux-3.12.y
pi@rp /boot $ ls -ls
total 17752

If you are using a Pi 2, the kernel will be kernel7.img, if you are using any other Raspberry Pi it will use kernel.img.

Ok, thanks for the clarification.
I have a RPI B+, so I can erase the kernel7.img ?

Thanks,
Mat

You can also trash that 3.12.y kernel you've got in there.

According to this

you're not running either of the kernel*.img files, but the linux-3.12.y file.

Does the Raspberry Pi Zero W use kernel7.img or kernel.img?

kernel.img is used by RPi 1B, 1A, A+, B+, 2B (first version) Z, Z (with camera), ZW, CM1

kernel7.img is used by the RPi2B2, RPi3B, CM3 and CM3L.

Hi,
that's strange  because I put 3 files in my sd for booting a bare metal Pi zero hello world (only a blink led to say hello):
bootcode.bin
kernel7.img
start.elf

Files bootcode.bin and start.elf come from raspberry firmware, while kernel.7.img is created by me using this code :
https://github.com/cirosantilli/raspber ... 91e13fd764

The code from the github example is for Pi 2, but works in my Pi Zero too.

(Thank you guys for this topic, very very interesting )

Regards

Leonardo
