Unable to connect Seagate external drive

Fri Feb 20, 2015 7:47 pm

I'm new to Raspberry Pi and I wanted to use an external hard drive as my primary storage.. so went and got a Seagate BUP Slim BK 1TB HDD. My Pi is set up with Raspbian.

When I turn on the device and run sudo fdisk -l I only see my SD card. So when I run dmesg to check the log messages, this is the relevant set of messages:

Code: Select all

[ 4.837878] usb 1-1.4: new high-speed USB device number 5 using dwc_otg
[ 5.200091] usb 1-1.4: New USB device found, idVendor=0bc2, idProduct=ab24

[ 5.370438] usb 1-1.4: required by the UAS driver. Please try an other USB controller if you wish to use UAS.
[ 5.417744] usb-storage 1-1.4:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected
This is the message that caught my attention:
The driver for the USB controller dwc_otg_hcd does not support scatter-gather which is required by the UAS driver. Please try an other USB controller if you wish to use UAS.
I did a Google search and couldn't find out what it means. Is this bad?

Any help on this matter would be appreciated. Am I going to be able to use this hard drive?

Well that's something new.

Presumably the HCD interface has been extended and our hilariously overcomplicated driver has fallen behind the times. I'll see what is happening.

I should note that the drive is not externally powered. Would that have an effect? Also I have updated my Raspbian to the latest updates.

""UAS was introduced as part of the USB 3.0 standard, but can be used for slower USB 2.0 devices assuming compatible hardware, firmware and drivers are used""

""As of 2012, the Linux kernel also had native UAS support, but it had compatibility problems with Texas Instruments chipsets. The Linux driver had "broken" status from December 2012 until September 2013. Version 3.18-rc4 of the Linux kernel disables buggy UAS implementation in xHCI host controllers Etron EJ168, ASMedia ASM1042 and VIA VL80x""

@fruitoftheloom I'm not sure what that means unfortunately. Don't have a lot of knowledge around computer hardware. :(

The first step is to increase the power available to the USB Ports from the standard 600ma to 1200ma

In Raspbian config text you need to add

Code: Select all

max_usb_current=1
Then you need to fully update Raspbian

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
reboot
Then try the hard drive again to see if this resolves the issues..
