Overclocking the Pi 1

Tue Feb 17, 2015 3:21 pm

I have several Raspberry Pi's and I want to overclock my Raspberry Pi model B to 2ghz or higher. With a pi submerged in mineral oil or with a water cooler could I get to that high of clock speed. I know it will void my warranty.

I hope you dont really mean SUBMERGE, but it should be ok if you set it up right and use a external hard drive so you dont burn up your sd.
ras pi 2, gotta love it.

What about a water cooler. How far could I overclock the pi? If I can always keep it cool can't I keep increasing the speed. Can the pi 1's power supply handle the added strain?

yes if you keep it cool you CAN IN THEORY keep booting up the speed, but dont forget that parts have a optimal value that when pushed above will cause the system to shutdown and only boot up to a white or blue screen never to be unbricked (it becomes a hardware issue). Always be careful when overclocking, most desktops can be kept to a overclock level without watercooling up to 125 degrees (remember this doesnt mean there isnt damage caused over time and a raspberry pi is not a desktop) i suggest mineral oil unless you are going to use the heated water, becouse if you use the heated water then you can save cash not having to recool it.

You won't have any luck overclocking your Pi1 to anywhere near that level without modifying the board to provide an external precise core voltage. Heat isn't the main problem.

So I have a bench power supply can I use that? How much current can the Raspberry Pi model B's power supply handle?

It's got nothing to do with the main power supply to the Pi. It is the internal core voltage to the CPU, which is about 1.2V iirc. How accurate is your PSU? Can it control the voltage to an accuracy of at least 0.01V?

There's a thread somewhere about overclocking and providing an external supply to the core. It's fiddly work.
