WiFi not working when in NOOBS

Wed Mar 23, 2016 6:36 pm

Hello,

My problem is that when I am in the NOOBS startup ui, it will not connect to the internet with my dongle.
So I can still install raspbian but not any of the other systems.

Can someone please help?
Thanks. :D

What model of RPi? What WiFi dongle?

I was under the impression only the Official Raspberry Pi WiFi Dongles and the RPi 3B WiFi was supported in NOBS :?:

Broadcom Chipsets BCM43143 & BCM43438

Unfortunately the NOOBS documentation is hard to find but....maybe:

Rather than negativity think outside the box !
RPi 4B 4GB (SSD Boot)..
Asus ChromeBox 3 Celeron is my other computer...

Sorry for the late reply.

Old version of NOOBS did not support wifi at all.
Later versions only support the official Raspberry pi broadcom chipsets as FotL indicated above.
To install the others via NOOBS you will need a wired internet connection.
If that is not possible for you, you will have to download them yourself from http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/ and copy them to your SD card in a folder alongside Raspbian. Or use PINN to install them from a USB stick. Look for details on how to do this on the NOOBS github.
Failing that, download the images of the distros you want from the Raspberry pi website and install them directly using Win32DiskImager

I don't want to hijack this thread but I have a question to fruitoftheloom.
Do you mean only official WiFi dongle is working with Raspbian installed by NOOBS?
What if I install Raspbian directly?
I struggle for 3 days to get it working properly but I see a lot of complains for WIFI along the forum and specially in the sticky "WiFi Issues ? Start here" thread. If you can help me, please have a look in this thread for my posts.
I am on the way to give up, bad experience for the first time I want to use Raspbian. Openelec/Kodi runs like a charm on the same hardware.

No... Here we are only talking about the wifi supported by NOOBS, which is the OS installer and Boot selector and is quite limited.
This has nothing to do with the version of Raspbian that NOOBS installs, which is exactly the same as the version you would install manually.
Raspbian supports many different types of wifi dongles.

Sorry to read of your problems with the 8188 - but the Wifi thread is probably the best place to get that sorted.
I only use RT5370 dongles (or the 3B builtin wifi) and never had a problem.

Yes totally irrelevant this is a discussion of the NOBS v1.9 installer / chooser Wireless Support.
