Case for Pi & foundation 7" touch screen

Tue Feb 16, 2016 3:05 pm

Hi All,

Please check out our new case for the Raspberry Pi and foundation 7” touch screen available from RS:

http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products/ ... wwodbugEZA

The case is freestanding and fits the foundation 7” touch screen, and provides access to all external connectors on the Raspberry Pi PCB. It also allows access to the micro USB connector on the touch screen adapter PCB. The rear cover is fastened via “snap-fit” connectors and can therefore be easily removed for access to the GPIO connector etc. The SD card is not accessible when the Pi is inserted into the plastic case. There are 2x integrated wall mount features located inside the rear cover. Located at the top is a camera slot for mounting the official Pi-Camera module to the case – this is forward facing. The base includes 2x non-slip rubber feet.
Each box contains the following:
1x Case
4x Screws for assembly
2x Rubber feet

White version coming soon. :)

Hm, interesting. I like the idea of the Pi being covered. Does this case replace anything from the original screen?

Hi Buja,
The case does not replace anything from the screen. It encases the touch screen, the adapter board that comes with the touch screen and the Raspberry Pi.

Just a thought: a transparent back cover. Covering/protecting the Pi is good, but visibility is nice too.

And/or an opening for the GPIO, so you can easily mount for example a SenseHAT or an Explorer HAT.

A couple of questions, about a good looking case

1) will hats fit inside the case?
2) does the original camera cable reach when the camera is fitted on the unit?

The case is compatible with the sense hat, but the hat must be placed on the Pi before putting the case on.

Also I cannot confirm that the case will work with other hats at the moment. But hats with the same footprint as the sense hat will likely fit depending on component height.

Also the camera does reach with the original cable.

Have assemebled the case today,

my comments are it is a lovely looking unit nice finish but..

1) As far as i can see the screen is mounted the wrong way up in the case so will need to use the lcd_rotate option in config txt to resolve that.
2) the above means the sense hat is now flipped over

have i built somethign wrong or is this how it is?

You have put the case together correctly.

The lcd_rotate command is necessary, it was designed this way due to the position of the USB power connector on the adapter board and the minimum bend radius on the power cable.

how did you power the pi from the display board?

have you a photo of your case you coudl post, couldnt see a nice way to get the cable from the display baord interface to the pi?

In the end i soldered to wires on to the GPIO pins which i know isnt ideal as it is not protected.

Hi Imoss30, The official screen kit comes with some jumper cables, these are for carrying the power and I2C interface between the boards.

They're shown on the right hand side of the photo: http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/graphics- ... s/8997466/

We'll also be posting some pics of step-by-step assembly soon ;-)

I really like the design of this case and how the camera module sits in that slot, but wish that the camera itself was a bit more protected in it's own little case that then fits in the slot.

Do you have any plans to do this anyway?

This case looks really good. The only think that would make it perfect for me would be a version for people that install the Pi reversed on the screen, to minimize the depth of the setup. I've yet to see anything that would allow this sadly. Do you have any plans to make a version for that?
