The camera on the next Camera Module looks IMX219

Sat Jan 30, 2016 2:14 pm

From the commit https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware ... 7067e70180, there are some function names with "imx219" in start*.elf.
You can check it by doing this:

Code: Select all

$ wget -q -O - https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/raw/c7ec740caa359634d197249297ea597067e70180/boot/start_db.elf | strings | grep -i imx219
IMX219 is Sony's CMOS image sensor.

As you know, OV5647, the camera on the current Camera Module, is discontinued from July 31, 2014 (http://www.ovt.com/download_document.ph ... nt&DID=122).
And the commit is on May 13, 2015.

So I think the camera on the next Camera Module is IMX219.

Who knows ...

But that model looks interesting ... 8 megapixels, 3280x2464; 30 fps; moving to quad-HD960x540 on 240 fps ... Seems to be about 18 month old.

I would hope they'd pick a newer one with better specs, but ... ;)

I have 5 camera's that were all purchased in the past few months, and I would replace them in an instant if a better quality camera /sensor is made available (say higher resolution, reduced noise, better lens - wider angle but not fisheye, ...).

Hmmm, if the WayBack Machine is to be believed, this is the sensor for the new camera ... ;)

Nice, will have to get one - although the board size appears to have increased :(

Is this what you guys are looking at?

I'm wondering if the PQ stands for Premium Quality- I hope so!

Also, it'd be nice if they didn't glue a threaded lens in place... just sayin'

I don't see a detailed datasheet online. The product brief http://www.sony.net/Products/SC-HP/IS/s ... 140910.pdf shows a FSTROBE output intended for a flash, which I assume works the same way as OmniVision's chips do (eg. not useful as a video mode sync or even normal still sync without some special "flash" mode)

I thought this was amusing:
In addition, this product is designed for use in cellular phone and tablet pc. When using this for another application, Sony does not guarantee the quality and reliability of product. Therefore, don't use this for applications other than cellular phone and tablet pc.
