Power supply is inadequate. Either the power supply itself, or the USB power cable is causing a voltage drop when the camera starts - its takes 200mA so uses quite a bit of juice.

Code: Select all

[email protected] ~ $     vcgencmd get_camera
supported=1 detected=1
all seems to be fine, but for some reason it hangs up

i found out, that i can do picture fine, and the video is created too, but then it dies...

Are you running an up to date kernel?

Try sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to get to 3.18.7.

It's got to be the ribbon cable wiring, the SUNNY connector, a cruddy power supply or a cruddy USB-A to microUSB cable.

I'd start by assuming it's a cruddy microUSB cable.

Agreed. Even the best supply in the world would show this error with a bad USB cable.

So what have you got plugged in to the USB ports? If attaching a powered hub fixes the issues, it's definitely a power problem, something on the USB is taking all the power, when you start the camera the extra loads is browning out the system.

On a B+ or Pi2 you can increase the power to the USB ports using max_usb_current but you will still need to ensure the power getting to the pi is adequate - I would still check the USB power cable.

The symptoms you describe are exactly those of a power issue, unless I have misunderstood. The camera takes about 250mA when running, which, if the system isn't supplying enough to cope with the extra load, exhibits as either an ethernet dropout or a complete reboot/death.
