MicroSD Cards for B+ ?

Morning all,

Very much looking forward to the release of the B+. Does anyone have any advice on card compatibility etc. so I can get the relevant parts ordered in advance. I am considering either the Sandisk Ultra or Extreme 64GB card linked below.

Of course, labelling things as "ultra" doesn't really help explain which one is the highest performance, so if anyone is able to explain that too that would be very much appreciated.

I had bad experiences with the SD card slot on the older 512MB model (though the 256MB model B still works just fine!) so seriously looking forward to having a more solid construction on the new one!

and the micro SD cards that come with noobs on them from the foundation [or element14 or rs] are also perfect for this as they are *optimized* for RPi use...

I am interested in buying a micro SD card so I can copy the original NOOBS micro SD card contents onto it. I'd save the original one for safety and use the copy. I see good reviews on a Samsung EVO class 10 micro SDHC card (the 32GB is $18 and the 16GB is $10). Would these be OK for use in the R.Pi B+ ?

It has been stated several times this month and previously that the RPi I/O speed is suitably matched for Class 4 or 6 Cards

Whilst Class 10 cards should work with no issues, they are designed for faster I/O devices such as Full HD Video Cameras

More specifically, class 10 are optimised for long sequential bursts of data. But the Raspi on average produces short random accesses. So a card optimised for the latter will work faster than one optimised for the former.

I suspect that modern class 10 are actually fairly good at random access now as well though.

Possibly those marketed as "Ideal for Android ..."? (I have a couple, one's in a tablet, the other was briefly used for a test of NOOBS 1.3.9** but not "run in anger" )

Any genuine class 4, 6 or class 10 microSD that's from a reliable source will work. Beware of Chinese fakes from Amazon & eBay.

Class 4 & 6 are better optimised for the way your Raspberry Pi reads, writes and updates files on the filesystem.

Sizes from 4GB (at a push) to 32GB need no special handling. Sizes from 64GB to 512GB need to be reformatted before they can be used.

The RPF pre-loaded NOOBS 8GB card works best because it's insert, boot and go.

I had problems with multiple SanDisk 32GB I purchased and tried. I went with Samsung 16GB 10C microSD and have had no problems

I have 2 B+ boards right now for a project, one is using a Toshiba 8GB Class 10 that has 40M read & 10M write minimum speeds.

comparing this to the samsung class 4 I got with the noobs bundle it does out perform it - but only just.

comparison of these against the Verbatim 8GB class 10 SD I have in the older B board they are both faster.

if you were to be doing a tonne of writing to SD for some reason (let's say a video feed buffer just because its something we all probably understand) the higher write speeds of a class 10 will change this but in a typical system your read/write will be more like 70/30 therefore paying attention to that read speed is really important
