The second one won't work, we need something to be able running without Xorg.

Re: boot animation!!!

I tend to agree with Jim Manley that a VideoCore animation would be nice. I can't write one, but I found a man who could on Github, "bbond007".

This "works" as expected on 1.2.1 NOOBS Raspbian installation. It also works on just plain Raspbian except the console diversion doesn't have the desired effect - text still streams to the console before the animation runs.

Attached is a zip containing 2 files,

a cut down executable from bbond007's github repo,

a startup script called "1boing",

You need to edit "cmdline.txt" to divert console, blank cursor, etc., by adding these to the all-on-one line cmdline.txt:

logo.nologo loglevel=3 console=tty9 vt.global_cursor_default=0

Anyone brave enough to try this, & even better, vastly improve & correct it:

unzip the contents to your home folder,

sudo cp 1boing /etc/init.d/

Test run the script so you know what it will do on boot via:

sudo /etc/init.d/1boing start

If you get an error message back complaing about missing OpenGL lib's, you may need to update your RPi.

Finally, assuming you do see a full screen animation sans error messages,

sudo update-rc.d 1boing defaults

Then reboot.

After a few seconds of black screen, you should see the animation you saw in the earlier test, followed by several more seconds of black screen, followed by the login prompt.

Almost all of this is from various internet sources - almost no original thought :)

If you don't fancy editing cmdline.txt you can still run with the script on reboot but will have the RPi logo, screen messages, blinking cursor, etc..

So, immediate questions:

Why no screen divert of initial messages on startup with vanilla Raspbian, yet ok on NOOBs?

Is there a way to get a cursor back in the console?

Any way to get the remaining startup files to carry on in the background whilst the animation runs, thus reducing the black screen time before login prompt?

Here is what I use:

omxplayer is direct frame buffer player. It doesn't need xorg.
So just make it as boot script to start, and it will play yourr video.

When I start Pi it only need like 1 or 2 sec to start video.
If you haveany better solution let me know.

Any suitable application could be substituted for the animation application I used in the supplied file, eg., if a video only, ie. no audio, hello_video.bin will also work, or if you have an attached camera, the raspivid application, to provide "live animation" :) My example does not use, or require, X either.

The OP mentioned animation, hence the OpenGL RaspiBoing seemed appropriate to use.

The challenge however is to overcome the questions I asked previously, particularly as there are several iterations of Raspbian, omxplayer, etc..

Perhaps you meant to attach your script to show us how you overcame those issues?

Well, its quite simple really. You are thinking too big, all of you. When you start up your Pi, what do you get in hte top-left corner? The RPi logo. Make it a big bigger, and remove the text being printed, and there you are. Splash. XBMC has something like this.
I'm happy to help.

Would you write up instructions for how you did this, please, then?

{EDITED}
0.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install omxplayer
1. copy the boot video to /home/pi as boot.mp4
2.create this init script with your editor in /etc/init.d/asplashscreen

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/init.d/asplashscreen
3.the script:

case "$1" in

    ;;
esac

:
4.

Code: Select all

chmod a+x /etc/init.d/asplashscreen
insserv /etc/init.d/asplashscreen
reboot
this should do the trick if someone could reconfirm it.
