Wifi Dongle : TP-Link TL-WN723N V3

Thu Sep 12, 2013 6:34 pm

Hi,

I had purchased a WiFi Dongle for my Raspberry - Pi but it is not getting detected.

The device I am having is: TP-LINK: TL-WN723N V3

After attaching the device I did lsmod and I see the following output

[email protected] ~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9512 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:8179 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

When I checked the wiki page : http://elinux.org/RPi_USB_Wi-Fi_Adapters I am can see :

TL-WN723N V3 USB ID: 0bda:8179; Needs custom driver on Raspbian wheezy.

Can anyone help me to get a custom driver on RAspbian Wheezy ?

More information:

When I did
[email protected] ~ $ sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode monitor
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :

Your wifi device uses the same USB ID, ID 0bda:8179, as the TP-LINK TL-WN725N V2 so I would expect it to use the same driver, 8188eu.ko.

I have three different driver revisions. Which one you should use depends on the revision of raspbian you have installed. This you can find using command uname -a

My own RPi shows

Code: Select all

Linux raspberrypi 3.6.11+ #541 PREEMPT Sat Sep 7 19:46:21 BST 2013 armv6l GNU/Linux
for 3.6.11+ #538 and #541 use 8188eu-20130830.tar.gz
for 3.6.11+ #524, #528 or #532 use 8188eu-20130815.tar.gz
for 3.6.11+ #371 up to #520 use 8188eu-20130209.tar.gz

Download and install the driver using the commands

Code: Select all

wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/8188eu-2013xxyy.tar.gz <--set data code for driver version
tar -zxvf 8188eu-2013xxyy.tar.gz <--set data code for driver version
sudo install -p -m 644 8188eu.ko /lib/modules/3.6.11+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless
sudo insmod /lib/modules/3.6.11+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/8188eu.ko
sudo depmod -a
After installing the driver you will need to configure the wifi. You can use the Wifi Config GUI in the graphical desktop, or manually edit files /etc/network/interfaces and/or /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf depending how you want to set up your wifi. There is some basic information for setting up manually on http://www.fars-robotics.net

I am attempting to install the drivers for TP-WN725N with no luck. Might you point me in the right direction? When attempting to stalling the latest drivers I get the following error:

"Error: could not insert module 8188eu.ko: Invalid module format"

That error generally means that the driver is compiled for a different linux kernel version. This is one of the things that irritates me the most about Linux.

Take a look here for details of drivers available and installation info.

This post is now rather out of data. I now use xyyzz. Where x is year, yy is month, zz is day.

Take a look at the post here with the drivers listed for different versions of raspbian. NOTE: they will only work with raspbian.

The instructions for installing on your currently running kernel version are

Code: Select all

wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/8188eu-201xyyzz.tar.gz <--set data code for driver version above
tar -zxvf 8188eu-201xyyzz.tar.gz <--set data code for driver version above
sudo install -p -m 644 8188eu.ko /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/net/wireless
sudo insmod /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/8188eu.ko
sudo depmod -a
You will need to change the first two instructions in the list above and replace xyyzz in the code 8188eu-201xyyzz.tar.gz with the correct date for the driver version you need.

If you look at the list of drivers they are for example like this

Code: Select all

3.12.18+ #673, #677 - 8188eu-20140425.tar.gz
3.12.18+ #679, #680 - 8188eu-20140501.tar.gz

3.12.19+ #681, #682 - 8188eu-20140509.tar.gz
3.12.19+ #684 - 8188eu-20140509.tar.gz

3.12.20+ #685 - 8188eu-20140509.tar.gz
So if you are using kernel raspbian 3.12.20+ #685 this needs driver file 8188eu-20140509.tar.gz and you will need to replace xyyzz in 8188eu-201xyyzz.tar.gz in the install instructions with 40509 so the install commands will then be

Code: Select all

wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/8188eu-20140509.tar.gz
tar -zxvf 8188eu-20140509.tar.gz
sudo install -p -m 644 8188eu.ko /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/net/wireless
sudo insmod /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/8188eu.ko
sudo depmod -a
Of course the value you need will depend on the kernel version you are using and the driver it requires.

Hope that make sense for you.

Just tried using the link you post and it works OK for me. Can your Pi normally connect to the internet?
