I currently have Xbian running on my Pi, mostly using the PleXBMC add-on to play my movies. The other day I purchased the BenQ W1080ST projector. I connected the Pi to the projector via HDMI, but I was unsuccessful with surround sound (maybe because my dvd player/surround sound system is old?)
What do I need to buy to get at least a 5.1 system? I'm trying to keep things minimal
Re: Pi, Projector, Surround Sound?
You need a surround system amplifier. Connect Pi to amplifier and then through output to projector. You need hdmi output to get surround sound. Cannot be done on plugin output.

Re: Pi, Projector, Surround Sound?
The only way to do this is with a hdmi equipped av amplifier with hdmi video out, or a hdmi->hdmi and coax\optical audio extractor and a coax\optical equipped av amplifier.
In the future this might be easier if omxplayer gets support for usb soundcards with coax\optical, but those are your only options right now.
The projector is easy.. treat it the same as any monitor.

So something like this? Onkyo TX-SR313?

Re: Pi, Projector, Surround Sound?
I have that exact amplifier. Works great .
Re: Pi, Projector, Surround Sound?
Awesome.. So I guess for my setup I would connect the Pi to that amplifier via HDMI, then another HDMI to my projector?

Re: Pi, Projector, Surround Sound?
Exactly. If you have speakers you want to use with the amp, be sure they are between 6 and 16 ohms. You can start with 2 speaker if you like and the amp will downmix to stereo.
Re: Pi, Projector, Surround Sound?
Didn't realize that it was strictly a receiver, no speakers. Looks like I'll have to buy some since my sub doesn't have its own power source
Re: Pi, Projector, Surround Sound?
If you want a reciever on a budget with speakers included try this
http://www.richersounds.com/product/hom ... ama-yht196
there are also versions slightly better available

Re: Pi, Projector, Surround Sound?
I hate to bump such an old thread, but is there a HDMI hub or something that has more than one output?
I'm more sure if it's possible, but I'd love to have my cable, the Pi, and my xbox pass through the surround sound.
And if possible, get it so I can those sources be played on the projector or my tv
