TL-WN725N V2 wifi LED does not flash when connected (SOLVED)

Thu May 02, 2013 8:02 pm

I'm testing the driver for the TL-WN725N V2 wifi adapter - rtl8188eu. I've compiled the driver OK and the module loads OK and the wifi connects to my wireless network OK. Everything appears OK except that the wifi LED does not flash.

I've checked the wifi module on my Windows laptop and the LED flashes OK so it is not broken. Just doesn't flash when used with the Pi.

Does anyone know how the wifi LED is controlled? I'm expecting it's something to do with the driver source configuration but being rather inexperienced with Linux source I'm not sure where to look. Or is it some sort of configuration parameter that's incorrectly set.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Seems like it is an issue with a setting in the source code for the rtl8188eu driver. I've fixed my problem by making a change to the file include/autoconf.h. The driver also outputs loads of debug data to dmesg and this can be stopped by making a second change to the same file.

The changes to autoconf.h are detailed below. the first change, uncommenting the line //#define CONFIG_LED, fixed the LED problem and the second, commenting out the line #define CONFIG_DEBUG_RTL819X, stops the driver outputting the debug data.

Code: Select all

Hello,

Firstly, thanks for your work, because I've managed to install the TL-WN725N V2 in raspbmc.

I have one question about the led and dmesg stuff...

since i've installed the .ko file, where i can find the .h file you're talking about?

Thanks again

The file is in the driver source. /rtl8188eu/include/autoconf.h

Can someone post the source of the files?

The version I have doesn't have #define CONFIG_LED #define CONFIG_DEBUG_RTL819X in the autoconf.h file.

I tried to add them manually but didn't help.

Thanks !

There are several sets of source code. This one doesn't need any editing as it already has the LED working and is what I currently use

Code: Select all

https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8188eu
It appears to be a very heavily edited version of one of the following.

The following all need editing to get the LED to flash

Code: Select all

https://github.com/liwei/rpi-rtl8188eu
https://github.com/macliu010/pi_plus/tree/master/linux/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8188eu
https://github.com/Red54/linux-shumeipai2/tree/sunxi-3.0/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8188eu
Precompiled versions of the driver are available for Raspbian as follows
for 3.6.11+ #538, #541, #545 and #551 use 8188eu-20130830.tar.gz
for 3.6.11+ #524, #528 or #532 use 8188eu-20130815.tar.gz
for 3.6.11+ #371 up to #520 use 8188eu-20130209.tar.gz

Use command uname -a to determine the version you have e.g.

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi ~ $ uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 3.6.11+ #551 PREEMPT Mon Sep 30 14:42:10 BST 2013 armv6l GNU/Linux
pi@raspberrypi ~ $
Download and install the driver using the commands

Code: Select all

wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/8188eu-2013xxyy.tar.gz <--set data code for driver version
tar -zxvf 8188eu-2013xxyy.tar.gz <--set data code for driver version
sudo install -p -m 644 8188eu.ko /lib/modules/3.6.11+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless
sudo insmod /lib/modules/3.6.11+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/8188eu.ko
sudo depmod -a
Hope this is helpful.

Hi MrEngman,

Thank you for your reply !
I was looking for the source code to try to use it under centos.

I will try the versions you posted, hope I will get one of them working.

Have a great day !
