Half-Life
I was reading the minimum specs (500 mhz processor 96mb ram, 16mb video card) that you need to run HL and it seems possible. I was wondering if anyone has done it?

please, please, please!

Re: Half-Life
One huge problem, the specifications are for x86 architecture, the Pi uses ARMv6 architecture and no video card.......

I will always assume you are running Raspbian for desktop and Raspbmc for XMBC !
Re: Half-Life
The Rpi has a powerful GLES 1.1 and GLES 2 hardware processor on-board, way more powerful than anything you could dream about back in 1998 when HL was released. One huge problem, the specifications are for x86 architecture, the Pi uses ARMv6 architecture and no video card.......
The only problem is that, as far as I know, HL isn't open source. But sadly it's privative and hence dead, uninteresting software.
Re: Half-Life
If there's steam for linux, who says there won't be a 'micro steam' for portable devices? Then a pi version isn't too far off

Re: Half-Life
I loved that game back in the day - I spent all my waking hours playing it before giving up.
Two years later I flipped through the game guide in a shop only to discover I gave up just before the end (something to do with butterflies is hyperspace).
Gutted.

Re: Half-Life
Just thinking about HL not being open source, the Black Mesa project have released the original game, updated to use the Source engine (ie look like HL2 etc) with updated physics, textures and enhanced story ....for FREE!
So I can't see why a Pi version couldn't at least be attempted.

Re: Half-Life
So... what would you need to do to make HL run on the pi? I might try and attempt it probably never going to finish it but what are all the problems someone would encounter trying to make it?

Re: Half-Life
Trying to find the source code would be the first hurdle, then IF it compiles you need the data files... it should be like what was done to make quake 3.

Re: Half-Life
You can't really do anything about it. Only Valve has the source code, so only they can port it to the Pi.bluetape66 wrote:So... what would you need to do to make HL run on the pi? Re: Half-Life
Before you all descuss if they can/should port steam/steam like to the pi, consider that Half life 1 can run in dosbox
(after installing win 98).
So get the game and run it under Rasbian or Riscos

This sounds like a recipe for thirty-seconds-per-frame gameplay, to me.dntpls wrote:Before you all descuss if they can/should port steam/steam like to the pi, consider that Half life 1 can run in dosbox(after installing win 98).

Consider that DOSBox on ARMv7 hardware (i.e., hardware more advanced than the ARMv6 of the Raspberry Pi) tends to reach roughly around the level of an old 386 or so on average (the original Jazz Jackrabbit is pushing the limits, in my experience, and that's nowhere near as complex as Half-Life), and you'll soon realise that you're never going to run a game originally made for a minimum of a Pentium processor at 133MHz, no matter how much one wishes it can be done.

I can't believe it's free - I just bought it today intending to play it before I got The Orange Box (5 years late, I know!)SimonFD wrote:Just thinking about HL not being open source, the Black Mesa project have released the original game, updated to use the Source engine (ie look like HL2 etc) with updated physics, textures and enhanced story ....for FREE!

I will leave this here;

It is possible The Quake engine has already been ported (Well, Darkplaces) and considering that the Quake engine and GoldSrc engines are very similar, we might possibly see HL on a Pi someday.

I am amazed at what can be done by such a small and cheap device!
Re: Half-Life
Wasn't half life originally made on a customized quake engine?

Re: Half-Life
Yup. Gaben then made a few tweaks to the engine, and it became GoldSrc.sdd wrote:Wasn't half life originally made on a customized quake engine?
