Help - Can't Locate External HDD

Sun Feb 03, 2013 12:54 am

I've set my Pi up with a powered USB Hub, it seems to locate the hub but I cant find the HDD when I plug it into the hub: (this is the log without the HDD plugged in, when I then plug it in, I get the same result). Its as if its not recognising it.

What format is the partition on the hard drive?

Does it need to be something recognised by your OS to appear? I.e if it is formatted NTFS that could be why its not showing up?

I just bought a western digital external hard drive and plugged it in, did I need to do something to the drive pre-plug in?

Without the HDD plugged in, boot the RPi and USB hub to a command prompt. Plug in the HDD. Issue the command 'dmesg' and report here the last 10 lines or so.

Also report here what is returned by the command 'lsusb'.

Basically the last 10 lines are exactly what I posted above. Creating card, device chip, etc....

How many amps is the power supply to your hub? It's possible the drive isn't getting enough power to cycle up correctly.

Can you verify that the same HDD plus same powered hub plus another computer (non-RPi) combination works?

Okay so I tried the same combo but replaced the Pi with my laptop. Confirmation that the MY PASSPORT shows up immediately once plugged into the hub and I can browse the content.

I formatted my external drive to FAT32 for it to show up. I'm not sure what the default would be for that drive. Try formatting it?
