Unfortunately the Scratch developers have chosen to write Scratch 2.0 in Adobe Flash, perhaps one of the worst mistakes ever, given Adobe are ramping down usage of Flash and it is already deprecated on mobile platforms and Arm.

So it will not run on the Raspberry Pi.

Personally, I find the decision to go with Flash incomprehensible.

It is to be seen if they will be successful :

AFAIK they are still looking for developers !

So it begins,

Will they be successful with a the online flash-based version?
Did they miss the opportunity to remain on board with the Raspberry Pi?
Will they evolve into a multi-platform distribution strategy?

In my eyes,

...they will succeed as it is a fantastic application unto itself.
...the 1.4 version should remain a staple of the Raspbian distro as it excels at getting kids engaged with programming.
...I have hopes that some of the Scratch team may break off into investigating alternate architectures. That team has built something very special on a conceptual level and it would be a shame to have technology limit such innovation. Multiple architectures need to be considers in such cases. It is hard work, but it is University level research as well.

Once again, designing with redundancy is not unprecedented.

Also, we should push the Scratch team to offer us handles to latch into the program. RP users can thus be challenged to build interface to Scratch. There are yet many possibilities.

What do you think?

I see that Scratch 2.0 is coming on May 9th.
Any announcement re this wrt. RPi ?
If I don't hear anything 5 days earlier then the RPi foundation's sc-ifi credibility may well be waning.

kind regards
