Just testing out the Word/Paragraph Wrap via posting

Sun Dec 09, 2012 6:02 pm

Why ? I guess it's because I'm not accustomed to this method of input where you type away until you hit the right margin and then jump back to the left hand side without doing a carriage return.

I guess I must be an old timer because I am used to writing most things the same way i.e. the same as I do in Word or any other editor.
As you can see I am used to the old systems and software of the past where you always did a carriage return to terminate a line.

I think I am getting the hang of it.

How did I do ?

It feels a bit weird not using the carriage return the way I am used to but I think I will get there.

OK I wish someone had filled me in on this a ways back.
I have spent a lot of time on forums before and noone has ever really made the point to me before ( have you been told today ? ).

End of Test ( now we'll see what the formatting looks like
after I submit ).

Yeah I can do this.

cheers

Quite frankly it doesn't look as well formatted to my eye as
the way I am used to or normally do it. But If I make wider paragraphs
and then use the return it will make a noticeable difference.

Anyway I know it's a trivial thing ( trivial pursuit ) but in this game the devil is always in the details.

Wow - I'm impressed - a full seven inches of text :D

Thank you.

As a matter of interest, the format seems to vary depending on the browser, the OS, and whether or not you're on prosilver as well as the available screen. I've not tried it, but probably i-phones and the like make it look awful (my phone is a feature-phone, with no features)

Oh, and yes you're right - it's probably trivial. I also get iritated by misuse of apostrophes and people signalling right at roundabouts when they're going straight on. And American spelling. And that Southern France has better weather than Britain.

On a similiar note , could somebody explain what is this bevahiour is when i post from iOS ?

That sentence was wrapped around because i wrote over the width
the visible part of the entry box on Mobile Safari - the box
itself seems wider than the screen when the keyboard is focused (touchscreen).
If i pan with a active keyboard , the website is displayed correctly
and there seems plenty of space till i hit the end of a line.

When i switch to a Desktop with Firefox , i can still see the messy
formatting. But on a Desktop , i can see the whole entry box and
if i post, the formatting will wrap around normally , even on
Mobile Safari.

• Don't like the board ? Missing features ? Change to the prosilver theme ! You can find it in your settings.
• Don't like to search the forum BEFORE posting 'cos it's useless ? Try googling : yoursearchtermshere site:raspberrypi.org

hello ghans

I have no idea what may be happening there or actually I do have some ideas and the main one is that the code for each and every bit of software out there which implements word processing or some kind of input form or editor
is simply different and different packages do different things with editting and formatting ( also a function of graphics processing, X windows ? ).

I guess this is stating the obvious but as far as I know there have never really been any long lasting standards in this area anyway.
( which is what we really need, some standardisation ).

Below is a link to a post which highlights what I have been talking about since the beginning of this post. Look at the initial post and it's huge paragraph. To my mind this is just awfull to have to read
( my brain CPU chokes on this kind of writing style ).
Maybe if you persevere you can get through it and finally
get your reading done.

But folks it doesn't have to be like this.
Spliiting big paras into smaller ones is the best way to go
and makes text more readable.
People are telling me to use less carriage returns
and others are still writing like this
( an imbalanced equation )
although I am at least prepared to change what I am doing
if it helps.

In the end it is computationally easier to add carriage returns after full stops (or line length full), than to remove them, while maintaining a paragraph structure. It has better flow possibilities, although this depends on the HTML SPAN, DIV and TABLE attribute tags of the page style template.
