Controlling a Raspberry pi 4 with my laptop

Sun May 16, 2021 7:23 pm

Dear All,

I have had full success previously trying to interface the raspberry pi using its IP address , an RJ45 LAN ethernet cable via the USB port on the laptop, using the MOBAXTERM . After such success I tried to interface with my android phone but had not been successful, because of difficulty with my mobile's hotspot. Lately for a project I am trying to interface the raspberry PI with my laptop following the early procedure, but when the remote SSH session is started on the MOBAXTERM it gives the error message : Connection Refused. It is a similar message when I have used PUTTY after enabling theX11 transfer.
To check if the IP address has been correctly noted I have used the Advanced IP Scanner after connecting the raspberry pi with the ethernet cable with my laptop and then deliberately disconnecting the wi-fi of my laptop and indeed it could detect the IP of my raspberry pi. Furthermore, I pinged the IP address at the IP scanner and was successful and then also pinged at the command prompt and it was pinging successfully as well. All this time I kept the wi-fi of my laptop off. Also from the overview the power LED and the booting LED and two of the LAN LEDs are ON on the raspberry pi 4B .

I had followed these 2 videos:
1. to connect to the laptop:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJ7skYS5bjI

2. to connect to the Android phone:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHvJ-7lIySs

Would like to know what should I do to control my raspberry pi by my laptop.

the standard way is to enable vnc server in the preferences.
then install realvnc on your laptop & android.

I see which means we first need to have the raspberry pi work with a monitor and a keyboard, then do the menu>preferences>raspiconfig , install the vnc in the raspberry pi and then can work in the headless mode
Is it so @ Kerry_s

no, if you can ssh in run "sudo raspi-config", number 3 interface options> p3 vnc, press enter & select yes with the tab key.
forgot while your in there, you need to set a display size.

Again, if you can SSH into the Pi, an alternative to using a preset display size and VNC'ng into that it's also possible to start the RealVNC server manually in virtual mode with any convenient geometry (using display :1 instead of :0) .
FWIW, see my notes & examples here: http://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi ... uster.html
Trev.
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P3B+, P4B's & P400. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

@kerry_S

Hi Kerry,
As I mentioned either using PUTTY or MOBAXTERM with the LAN connected with the PI I am getting the message Network Refusal, therefore the only alternative is first setting up the desktop and then going from there.

yeah, if you didn't set it up in advance.
just to let you know the next time you create an image, the rpi-imager has a hidden advanced mode.
press: ctrl+shift+x
to access it.
