Rpi to set up a separate wlan with internet?

Wed May 05, 2021 10:12 pm

Is there any simple and easy way for a noob like me, to connect one of my rpis to a 5ghz wifi signal and get the pi to feed that back out from a network cable to a dual-band router? So that my dual-band router has the internet (when only connected with one network cable to the rpi) and is its own isolated Wlan?

You need to make a router out of the Pi.
Openwrt might be an option for that.

Make sure to configure the main router to accept a private address, delivered by the Pi, on its wan interface. “RFC 1918” might be mentioned in the relevant config option.
Another solution is to turn the main router into a bridged access point. In this case using a router OS on the Pi is strongly recommended because there is no secondary line of defense.

Performance will suffer:
- wireless uplink
- mild routing throughput on a Pi (depending on the model)
- 2 routers in a row (if you don’t set the main router to access point mode)

You might take a look at my hobby-project Pi-router though it works slightly differently as comapred to your use case.
Want to Transform an RPi board into a secure router?

Want to try an alternative OS to OpenWrt?
