Can the pi automatically switch between 3.5mm and HDMI?

Sun Sep 09, 2012 10:47 am

On a PC I can play music from speakers, but if I plug headphones into a 3.5mm jack the speakers are muted and sound plays through the headphones. This doesn't happen automatically on the Pi. Is there any way to set it up?

My monitor doesn't have a 3.5mm output, so I can't plug headphones into the monitor. I want to be able to plug the headphones directly into the pi.

I'm using XBian at the moment - I don't know if this comes with all the sound drivers that are on Raspbian.

On your PC/speakers, the audio is routed through the headphone jack, then goes on to the speakers. Plugging in headphones switches a mechanical switch which disconnects the speaker route. No intervention by the computer.

As I understand it, the Pi on boot-up it looks for HDMI, and if it finds it, routes the audio to that, otherwise routes it to the 3.5mm jack.

So since on the Pi the routing is in software, and it's done before Linux or any other OS starts, you can't easily do what you want
