Re: [Guide] Kodi on Raspbian Buster

Mon Jun 08, 2020 2:30 pm

Dear Forum,

I use the 18.6 Kodi on Debian Buster (headless) on my RP4. I adjusted all the audio settings so I could enjoy 5.1 Surround and it seems to works fine.
However, after pausing the video for a couple of seconds (or more) the center channnel suddenly switches to the right or left channel. It only happens when AAC/PCM is routed to the receiver (not with DTS, DD+... passthrough).

This can be fixed (during playback) whenever switch around between the output configuration options. There seems to be no particular setting that does the trick it just helps shuffeling back and forth between these options (best match, optimised, fixed). Eventually the center channel is back on track.

I posted this here https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=354589 and I seem to be not the only one that has encountered this bug.

Puck mentioned it might be fixed in 18.7 ("Fixes around multi-channel audio track support").

Do you have an idea when 18.7 will released for buster, and how likely it its to fix that?

Hi guys,

After 2 years of absolutely flawless functioning, after updating to Kodi 18.6.2, suddenly my Kodi install started behaving weirdly.

After a week of research of every possible aspect of my install, I've noticed that, since 18.6.2, for some reason Kodi ignores the "memorysize" line in my advancedsettings.xml, whilst properly observing the rest.

From the log:

Code: Select all

2020-06-08 01:11:34.570 T:1900434352  NOTICE: Contents of special://profile/advancedsettings.xml are...
                                            <advancedsettings>
                                              <cache>
                                                <buffermode>1</buffermode>
                                                <memorysize>‭47772160‬</memorysize>
                                                <readfactor>5</readfactor>
                                              </cache>
                                            </advancedsettings>
However, also:

Code: Select all

2020-06-08 01:22:07.550 T:1900389296  NOTICE: cache.memorysize: 0MB
Changing these values would change Kodi behavior in expected ways, except for the memorysize value, which seems to be ignored in all cases.

Ultimately, I found that the weird behavior of Kodi (intermittent stopping of movies, strange buffering issues) was caused by filecache being used instead of RAM for buffering (memorysize=0, instead of the set amount) and then Kodi /OS running out of disk space as a result.

I have temporarily resolved the problem by cloning my SD card onto a bigger one, and mounting .kodi/userdata/temp to its own, huge partition. While this solution works just fine from a Kodi-behaviour perspective, it can't be a permanent solution due to tear and wear on the card.

Can you please verify is this is a bug, or otherwise suggest what I could do?
Which RPi version ? Works fine on RPi 3B here at least.

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ cat ~/.kodi/temp/kodi.log | grep memorysize
                                                <memorysize>31457280</memorysize>
                                                <memorysize>139460608</memorysize>
2020-06-08 15:59:00.614 T:1900405680  NOTICE: cache.memorysize: 133MB
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ cat ~/.kodi/userdata/advancedsettings.xml

    <buffermode>1</buffermode>
    <memorysize>139460608</memorysize>
    <readfactor>20</readfactor>

Also RPi 3B, actually.

I've tried a clean install as well, and the issue persists. Any idea?

I don't know what you consider a clean install, but if it is "just" removing and installing Kodi again, the settings will persist. To start Kodi with clean/default settings, you just need to remove your ~/.kodi folder, generally /home/pi/.kodi if you are using "pi" user.
But post your Kodi debug log, maybe we can find what's wrong with your install: https://kodi.wiki/view/Log_file

Yes, there was a problem with the RPi4 binary and I removed it yesterday, but I still didn't have the time to take a look at it. I will update it ASAP.

Hi, thank you for the quick response.
Yes, I meant a clean install - remove .Kodi folder, full purge and reinstall of kodi binaries.

My log file (of the clean install) is here:

https://paste.kodi.tv/mozutoxizu.kodi

Thank you.

Any ideas why when I start Kodi I get a black screen with a cursor?
I changed the GPU ram to 128mb.

What am I doing wrong?
I installed with: sudo apt install --no-install-recommends kodi"

Cheers for your work. :D :mrgreen:

Your log seems fine, I have no idea. It can be your advancedsettings.xml file formatting. Make sure you create and edit the file on the RPi, don't create it on a windows machine.

Hmmm, it was already set to 256mb. I checked then tried to run Kodi.

It shouldn't be a problem. In which VT does it run ? Does it work if you change to another VT and run Kodi from there ? If not, what is the output ?

Virtual Terminal. You can use CTRL+ALT+FX in which X is the VT number. For example CTRL+ALT+F2 changes to VT2.

Virtual Terminal. You can use CTRL+ALT+FX in which X is the VT number. For example CTRL+ALT+F2 changes to VT2. Desktop Environments generally use VT7.

Your log seems fine, I have no idea. It can be your advancedsettings.xml file formatting. Make sure you create and edit the file on the RPi, don't create it on a windows machine.
Edit:

The problem is solved. It was a formatting issue, though not a line-terminator one.

What I've done is copy the advancedsettings.xml from share/kodo/system and edit that. Now cache works as it should again.

Kodi updated to 18.7

No Raspbian specific changes, except for one 5.4 kernel fix for the RPi 2/3 (Thanks Dom aka popcornmix). For more info check the github page.

Just update and upgrade the packages has you normally do.*

*Note that this packages are not yet available on Raspberry Pi repos, only on the PiPplware repo, you have to wait a little bit.

@Rascas

Nice job on the Kodi build, it has been running great.

I couldn't find it mentioned anywhere in this topic, but is the Libretro cores available anywhere? I see you have kodi-game-libretro, but there are apparently no cores/emulators installed. Is that available through another repository?

If you poke over at Team Kodi's PPA, it looks like there are a bunch of other packages kodi-game-libretro-bnes, kodi-game-libretro-stella, etc.

https://launchpad.net/%7Eteam-xbmc/+arc ... &start=150

Thanks.

Hello
I have replace my raspi PI 3 by a raspi PI 4 4Go
I have on this PI 3 Kodi who start at the reboot of raspbian
For this I have put a commandline in crontab

@reboot kodi &

This method whas gived in a post in this forum but the post is old and I have not find this....
So i put my question here....

I have downloaded the latest Raspbian and install Kodi on my Raspi PI4 4Go....

When I start the Raspi PI 4 there is no, problem....

Under the desktop Kodi run without problem with my parameter of skin....

So the next...
I need the program Kodi start at the reboot of Raspbian so I have done the same line of command

crontab -e(with nano)

I have write a new line like this on the crontab :

@reboot kodi &

So after register I reboot the PI 4 and after the boot I see a blank screen ant imposible to access at kodi and not at the desktop...

If I erase the "@reboot kodi &" on the crontab so there no problem

On the RPi 4 with Raspbian + desktop, your crontab probably won't work.
On the first post you have a better way of doing what you want.

Hi,

Problem changing resolution in Kodi

I installed Kodi in Raspbian. (Raspbian 10 Buster (kernel: Linux 4.19.118-v7 / Kodi 18.7 Git 20200528 compiled 2020-06-12)

As Kodi in Raspbian isn’t running in windowed mode it always runs on HDMI 0 (the one besides the power adapter).

I wanted Kodi to run on both screens (not at the same time ... so either standard or TV)

My setup:
Standard Monitor (for everyday use) can handle max 1024x768.
I now added a HDMI-switch, so the output of HDMI 0 can either go to the standard monitor (1024x768) or to a tv (resolution 1920x1080).

I then created two profiles with two different resolutions (profile A and profile B).
The profiles are identic except the resolution. But switching from Profile A to Profile B doesn't change the resolution.
On profile B under system settings it says 1920x1080, but if i logon to Profile B it remains on 1024x768 (from profile A)

Is there a way to overcome this?

Thanks for reading.

Re: [Guide] Kodi on Raspberry Pi OS / Raspbian Buster

On a clean install of Raspbian on a Pi4 I get a black screen when launching KODI from the desktop. Not no signal, a blank screen. If I power cycle the TV it's HUD says 720p which is what it should say.

If I take the Pi and connect it to a computer monitor using the same HDMI cable it works as expected.

It displays the Raspbian desktop as expected, but when KODI is launched it just goes black. Is my TV cursed or did I miss some setting for KODI?

HDMI Group = 1
HDMI Mode = 4
Some adjustment to Over scan so the desk top would fit the screen.

Tried HDMI Boot up to 11, Hot plug, Made sure "Fake GL" driver was used.

Return to “Raspberry Pi OS”
