Zandronum

Fri May 15, 2020 7:41 am

Hello,
some time ago I bought the 2gb Raspberry Pi 4 B version, and I was just thinking: is there a way to port Zandronum to Raspberry Pi?
I am not interested in GZDOOM just to be clear, I would like to play Zandronum.
I know there has been a discussion about setting up a server via RPI, but that it not the full-size game.
Any advice on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Weli

The developer/maintainer of the software would be most knowledgeable about the possibility of other implementations -

Disalaimer: I've never even heard of Zandronum before...

...But, it looks like some people have managed to compile it for Raspberry Pi.

Want to run Zoom on your RPi? Easiest way is with Pi-Apps - just click Install.

Pi-Apps also includes the full version of Minecraft, Chromium Media Edition, Pi Power Tools, an automated email checker, and 16 other useful programs not in the repos.

I see people in the Raspberry Pi gaming forums asking the same question about Zandronum. Doesn't GZDoom, and Zandronum use the same graphics engine? The programs should compile similarly, I don't know if you will be able to connect to servers. Will the Zandronum servers be compatible with ARM computers, I have no idea. I had a conversation with someone about Zandronum. The person asked me about Zandronum, and the question had nothing to do with Angband. This conversation takes place in a topic I started, which shows you how to build Angband with SDL2 on the RPI computer. Here is a link to the topic:

I believe 1 of the people from the OpenPandora forums ported Zandronum to the RPI computer. OpenPandora is a modular handheld computer of sorts, whatever it is called. The person did successfully compile the Zandronum program on the RPI4 computer. The person was asking about Doomseeker for the RPI computer. I said I had no idea where to start. I said ask ptitseb instead, because that is the person that authored the Zandronum build for the RPI computer. Any Doom source port questions should be directed at the Doomworld forums. That is a forum that is for doom modding, great place to start. Here is a link to the Doomworld website:

Ptitseb, the guy on Open Pandora, has made a build which has RPi4 flags to allow disabling FMOD and EFX. See my thread on Zandronum here:

Good news is it works.. and it works well. I can play complex doom, and many other mods on it.
The bad news is it's Zandronum 3.1 (some beta version). If you are using doomseeker, it will not join any of the games due to version differences.

I'm looking for someone to play multiplayer invasion style maps, if you're interested.

Let me know if you have any problems with the Zandronum build and I'll try to help.

I found out the other day this is not entirely accurate. There are several 3.1 Alpha servers running that I was able to join. There doesn't ever appear to be anyone playing on these servers though.

I did find someone willing to install Zandronum 3.1A on their computer and I was able to find their server, using Doomseeker, and play a game with him. It was brutal doom V20 on the Doom2 map01. It played fine. There were times where things would glitch due to network lag, but I think this may have had something to do with the guy hosting AND playing the game at the same time? Not sure.
