SSH very slow - SOLVED

Sun Feb 16, 2020 11:02 am

I have a new Pi Zero WH and I have trouble working with it through SSH.
It works, but the response is so slow you cannot work with it. Typing things on the command line can take several minutes (actually, typing ahead works, but the response can take a few minutes).

The Zero runs Raspbian 10 Buster Lite, and I tried to SSH into it from a PC running Linux Mint and from a Windows laptop with Putty. Because I experience the same problem with both remote computers I think the problem is with the Zero.
With a Nexdock (screen & keyboard directly connected) the Zero works perfectly.

So what can I do?

So what is running on your pi zero that could be using all the cpu time ? try running htop to see what hogging the cpu.

have you checked the wifi link to make sure that's not the cause of the problem, try pinging your pi from one or both of your other PC's

Or it could likely be the wi-fi network. The Raspberry Pi Zero has only 2.4GHz wifi and interference is very common in that band. Check the signal strength and quality and, if you can, also see if there is any interference from adjacent channels or noisy devices. And/or try a different channel but choose only from 1, 6, or 11 on your access point.

Thanks for the replies.
htop does not give anything special, but when I shut down the Pi 4B (also on the WiFi network) things improved.
While I am writing this the Zero is compiling SC (Spreadsheet Calculator, some 20,000 lines in C) to keep it busy in one SSH session and I can work simultaneously in another SSH session. So it seems it is a WiFi issue and the Pi 4B is a bit hungry :D

One of Pi Zero's uses this

https://store.google.com/gb/product/eth ... chromecast

Its rather neat because the ethernet and the power go in through the single thin cable.

If WiFi is the issue then ethernet should solve the problem.

You don't have some thing silly like both pi's having the same hostname ?

No, nothing that silly, but I cannot rule out any other silliness.
