ras pi 4 nas and replication over internet

Tue Dec 31, 2019 1:14 pm

I have an idea and it might not be so well thought out

but basicly i want to build a nas with raid 6, no problem finding guides etc for that

but i also want to have a remote copy of that (either at parents or friend etc)

it would be nice if both ends could write to the nas but not look in to each other files

so if i had the remote nas at my friend he should be able to write to it from windows and then his data would be replicated back to my nas and the other way round

i have looked at glusterFS but the guides for geo replications are not that good, and i have doubts if that is what i want/need

any ideas?

PS i know its overkill with raid6 and remote backup, but i like the "belt and suspender" method
PPS and of course the internet link will impact on how fast things can be replicated, but i would like it to be as fast as it can

Perhaps syncthing could be of use?

Yes. I’ve seen it work fine on Pi3. Not the fastest, but robust and tenacious.
Mind that its main purpose is mirroring. Delete something on one side, it gets soon deleted everywhere.

i wanted to try ask this on the owncloud forum but some cert issue prevented me from accessing the site

anway, me and my uk based has been thinking about using own cloud

but will either of us be able to access the others data? one pi will of course run own cloud and the other pi will just sync the first ones data

but we dont want to be able to view each others data, not even if we both have access to both pi
own cloud was just the best we could think off to get encryption

I use 'rsync' to back up my Nextcloud instance on one raspberrypi in my house, to a second raspberry pi. There is no reason why this cannot be done from one IP to another.

You would need to ensure a fixed IP at one end: either you 'push' from your server to the back-up (which has the fixed IP), or you pull to the back-up from the server (which has the fixed IP).
