Pi Camera Cable Length

Fri Nov 29, 2019 8:23 am

Good day to all! :)

Why does the Pi Camera have such a short cable?

If I want to place the camera on the street, then it turns out the device itself will also have to be placed on the street?

Or are there other ways? :geek:

The electrical signals on the cable are very tiny and also fast. Long cables can mean that the signals become too weak to use or will get corrupted during transmission. The camera module is similar to those used in some mobile phones. How long are the cables inside them?

As stated there are unofficial extensions available, but the picture quality is not guaranteed, especially at higher resolutions or frame rates.

You can go longer. 15cm is OK on my V1 camera. Lengths up to 30cm need local testing. There's even an adaptor that splits the cable put and lets you run over an HDMI cable as an extension.

Only 15cm is supported, but I use 1m and 2m cables routinely:

It depends how far away the street is, but you may find it's cheaper to place a Pi close to the camera, and use very much cheaper network cable for the long distance
