Logic NOPE gate IC

Mon Nov 11, 2019 6:36 pm

Several decades back, when i was in engineering school, I came across a very special data sheet. We were dealing with typical quad package logic DIP devices and spent countless hours reading the Texas Instruments TTL data book. From somewhere, another data sheet appeared that described a NOPE gate. I personally worked with some of these and learned a lot about troubleshooting from them. However I can no longer find a data sheet for them. I don't know who published it, but it was not included in the Texas Instruments book.
The truth table was rather simple: the output is zero or FALSE, regardless of the input. I'd like to get a copy of this document if anyone can come up with one.
Thanks.

Thats not a dataheet, that is a joke.

What a brilliant April Fools day spoof, the NOPE gate !

Hope you find an original publication, Google is not helping here.

Kind of like the monode devices or the WOM memory we thought of as kids in 1972.

Elektor announces
new logic

Beek, Limburg, 1 Apr. 1984-
Elektor, one of the world’s major
suppliers of kits and components,
today announces a new line of
feminine logic which is now-
available from stock to Elektor
readers.

The first device in this new logic
family is called the 'Maybe’ gate.
Its new logic symbol is shown
here.

The device functions as follows:

(a) inputs 1 and/or 2 ‘high’, may-
cause the output to go ‘high’
(but maybe not)

(b) if the output does go ’high’ it
will remain ‘high’ unless it
goes ‘low’

(c) If the output is ‘high’ and
either input 1 or 2 goes ‘low’
the device will probably go
Tow’

Elektor is certain you can see the
potential for the ‘Maybe’ gate in
such items as 'household
computers’, ‘computer-piloted
automobiles’ and, most important
of all, w eather-forecasting com-
puters.

Elektor . Peter Treckpoelstraat 2,

Ernst,

Wonderful, simple humor from an age of innocence. We are not allowed to joke like that anymore in the age of CoCs and such.

I just added a link to the original magazine, just looking at a few of the issues was very interesting (and brought back memories).

How do you make a MAYBE gate from transistors Dougie?

Don't need transistors. Just two resistors. For most logic families, equal values. Work out the circuit yourself  :D

It's real easy to make one. Take ANY TTL chip and power it up with 12 VDC!

I though humor was frowned upon here. Lol. Actually I found a few (at least some members of AHCT family) make YEP gate (always high regardless of input) in that state.

Ternary logic - Yes, No, Maybe, very useful for fuzzy logic type application.
Sometimes the logic is -1, 0, 1 and yes they did make a computer that used Ternary logic.
Near quantum computer problem solving ability

Nope gates are used for making Null files in hardware?

It's when we get ternary logic perfected that the chip makers will be able to add the ultimate DWIM* instruction and all computers will only need that and HALT to solve every problem.

Xilinx have 6LUT logic that can make ternary logic gates.

IIRC the first X-ray CT scanners used ternary logic to compute the image from the X-ray data.
Sorry I don't have a verifiable source.

In my long past undergraduate years we had AND, OR, NOR, NAND (RTL) logic devices - come of these even had 2 gates in the one package!

I tried to design a BUT gate, but the logic defeated me.

I'm sorry - I just cannot refrain:
- aren't scientist (read physicists) already working on it? I think they're calling it 'quantum' computer. My understanding is that it already has the answer even *before* you asked the question!

But then you have to build a much more complex gate to work out what the actual question was.
