My Raspberry Pi is electricuting me with TV Hat

Hi,

My Raspberry Pi overtime seems to be having some form of electricity on its metal usb shell bits, and getting really hot (though I'm more concerned about the electricution). My setup is using a RPi 3, Official TV uHat plugged into a rooftop aerial and connected to a USB keyboard, mouse and plugged into ethernet. My TV Aerial has a powered distribution box in the loft that was here when we moved in, and I have discovered that occasionally this one line seems to have power running through it occasionally.

Any ideas? Sorry if I haven't been good at describing lol

Get a specialist in to replace it would be my thought from your description.

The shells of the USB ports and Ethernet jack getting warm is to be expected. They're part of the general heat dissipation for the SoC.

As already mentioned, having mains voltage where ground should be is hazardous. I would suggest checking what's going on with a neon circuit tester such as this one.



While much safer than verifying you have a ground fault by touching the shell of the Ethernet jack with your pinky finger, if you don't know enough about electricity to use such a device properly, it would be wise to let someone who does perform the test. Such things are available at Walmart here; however, anything can be dangerous if used improperly, especially with 250V.

I've had a poke and this appears to be the case - I've somehow gotten an incompatible power supply which is distributing a small amount of current through the output coax cables probably not a safe setup at all but it works I guess, also it seems that my ancient fan seems to have grounding problems and has electric current going through the metal shell, of which the raspberry pi ethernet port was touching and therefore electricuting me and has now been thrown out and will be replaced shortly!
