PI 4 4gb 4k playback on chromium youtube

Thu Sep 05, 2019 2:42 am

I just setup raspbian on the PI 4 4gb on a 4k tv and tried to play a 4k video on youtube using chromium to test. However, the maximum resolution that youtube shows on the settings is 1080. The resolution that the OS shows is 3840 x 2160.

Is there any special setting that I need to configure?

Hi !

The Rpi4 can't handle 4k videos on Youtube. Can't even handle 1080p videos correctly in fullscreen... Barely ok in windowed mode.

It can play 720p video smoothly in fullscreen, that's it.

As above. Add to that repeated tab crashes, lock ups, dropped video and sound, then sprinkle increased mouse and keyboard lag the more the CPU is pushed and you have an unholy mixture of frustration with a general sense that you have been conned and you will never buy another of their products and you will work tirelessly t ensure that other people do not fall victim to their marketing rubbish about this being a desktop computer.

If you want to move a robot around or uses it as something other than a desktop then go ahead. I mean they sold millions so it must be what it says on the box and you the user are stupid for not knowing that you will spend the majority of your computing time fixing stuff that 99.9% of other OS's sorted out 10 years ago.

Better still, buy an old PC and install Windows 98 on it - you will get the same experience.

What a ridiculous post. The Pi4 is £35. You expected a fully blown PC that can compete with an i9 desktop PC? For most people the Pi4 is more than adequate as a desktop PC. I use mine to code, browse, watch video, email and write documents. Your use case is not the norm.

Could it be possible to have an "official" reponse concerning this issue ?

I mean, just want to open youtube on a browser and watch a video. That's it. Is it possible ?
thanks,

As far as I understand, the issue is that Raspbian doesn't currently support 4k playback (YouTube automatically detects this, that's why it doesn't show in the resolution list)

Libreelec does, but I have heard it's got a lot more problems than Raspbian.

You have two choices, as I see it - wait for Raspbian to be updated to include 4k playback, or install Libreelec for the time being.

The H264 decoder doesn't support 4K. The H265 decoder does, but is only usable from Kodi at the moment.
Minimal Kiosk Browser (kweb)
Slim, fast webkit browser with support for audio+video+playlists+youtube+pdf+download
Optional fullscreen kiosk mode and command interface for embedded applications
Includes omxplayerGUI, an X front end for omxplayer

You can also get the Youtube add on for Libreelec and view 4k Youtube videos that way. I am sure H265 will be working in Raspbian in the near future. The GPU drivers are still being fleshed out at the moment and are still a work in progress.

I'm using raspiberry 2 B with hifiberry Amp for watch youtube and its fair enought. Just received the brand new pi 4 4gb ram and its playing 4k youtube video in libreelec over wifi, for 60fpp it runs very hot, solved with heatsink and a 5v fan.

The Pi4 is £35, if our usage is just for youtube you can buy 4k TV box for that price or less. No move robots around will be simple with that.
Choice what better suits.
