RPi 2 B+ reboots on USB drive connect

I have a fresh install of current Raspbian on RPi 2 B+.

When I connect or disconnect USB drive formatted to ExFAT it will restart immediately.

Is there a way how to let work with USB drives?

A USB hard drive? It sounds like the drive demands more power to spin up then your power supply / Pi can supply.

Verifying there is adequate power is never a bad idea, but rebooting (assuming restart means reboot) on disconnecting the USB drive doesn't sound like a power supply issue.

Connecting a power hungry peripheral like a hard disk while the Pi is running is not recommended. Ideally it should be connected before the Pi is powered on. When the disk starts it will take a lot of power for a short time, which can be a struggle for the power supply and cause the voltage to drop momentarily. This can cause the Pi to crash or restart.

Yes, I was able to read that drive after that enforced restart.

It is small Kensington thumb drive, I doubt it will consume significantly more than SD card.

Btw, it also restarts when I disconnect the drive (after SW unmount).

Sorry for mistake. It has 2011.12 printed on board.

Power adapter is 10W from Apple.

USB drive is some small Kensington thumb flash drive.

You can't plug a high power USB 2.0 device into a RPi1B (000E) the in-rush current overwhelms the power supply chip on the board and the voltage drop will cause a reboot. It's OK to remove USB devices. That reboot even happens if I connect a USB WiFi dongle or a Wemos while the RPi is running.

You have to plug-in the device before booting. With my Wemos I can unplug the USB-A to microUSB cable from it, insert the USB-A into the RPi then insert the microUSB into the Wemos (the current loss in the cable saves the day).

Things got better with the 2014 (new form factor) B+ onwards which has better USB power management. All five of my RPi1Bs, my original Zero (with a WiFi dongle) and my 2014 A+ exhibit this behaviour.

That does explain the problem with disconnection, though, unlike everyone else's explanation.
After all, where can the current that's already flowing go when you disconnect the drive?
