My first Pi 3B with Ubuntu Mate 16.04 played sound out of the audio jack with no issues that I can remember. I have a 3B+ also with Ubuntu Mate both 16.04 and 18.04 installs (different SD cards) and neither one of them will play sound. I have seen a lot of posts re. playing sound via HDMI but I am simply needing to use the audio port.
Sound preferences shows:
- Hardware tab
- - bcm2835 ALSA
- - choices of mono or stereo on 16.04, mono only on 18.04
- Output tab
- - Analog output
alsa-utils are installed and up to date
pulseaudio is also installed and up to date
Any suggestions? I can look at the 3B again but that is a bit problematic as it is my production gateway, route, firewall, dhcp and vpn sharing box.
TIA,
Ken
Re: No sound on Pi3b+
I just tried a fresh install of Raspbian Stretch - same thing. I installed audacious and played an mp3 file. No sound output.
Re: No sound on Pi3b+
It has been a long day... I did a search on configuring sound on the Pi and found the instructions https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... -config.md which reminded me I needed to run raspi-config. I did that an am now listening to Metal Queen by Lee Aaron
This issue is SOLVED.

Re: No sound on Pi3b+
Can you confirm proper audio in ubuntu mate 18? Because I only get crackly, delayed, unreliable mono on my 2B on ubuntu 18 and over in their forums no one seems to care even though multiple people have reported this.
Re: No sound on Pi3b+
Sound works fine on the 3B+ with Ubuntu Mate 18.04. I just listened to "Locomotive Breath" by Jethro Tull
I do not have a Pi 2. I do have a Zero and a Zero W but they run only Razpbian.

Re: No sound on Pi3b+
The audio hardware on the Pi 3B+ is shown as "Analog mono output" so no, there is not stereo. I do have a Bluetooth headphone receiver gizmo which does produce stereo sound from the Pi.
