1TB microSD Card is real!

Thu Jul 18, 2019 1:39 am

Well I thought they would not be out this year.

I have not looked for resellers or price and absolutely no plans for such a daft idea

And I note that it is the--problematic--A2 class...

Interesting. I have yet to find a use for more than a third of a 64GB card (still 40GB free), so may be a bit before that finds a use here.

Local online retailers seem to want about eighty cents per gigabyte for them.

In comparison, a standard 1TB HDD will set you back five cents per gigabyte, getting cheaper as you scale up with 4TB costing just 2.5 cents/gb!

Yup, even SSD is way cheaper. 1TB Samsung 860 EVO is $130, or 13 cents/GB, and there are cheaper brands of 1TB SSD that are less than $100 (<10¢/GB), compared to 43 cents/GB for the SanDisk 1TB micro SD card (all prices from Amazon). Even the 2TB Samsung 860 EVO SSD is about $150 less than the SanDisk 1TB uSD card.

They were only released recently (May 2019, I think), so they're pretty new.

Amazon is quoting me $428.94 for the Sandisk 1 TB.

maybe, if you really need it for the size. The same storage in USB3 SSD is 1/2 price and HDD at 1/10 the price.

I'm happy to accept 64GB should be enough for most people. Mind you I probably said that about 32GB, 16GB, 8GB, and 4GB as well.

It is mostly media which requires large amounts of storage. My digital audio collection exceeds 64GB and I would imagine other people's digital video collections are larger still. A few people will be holding multiple software sources or distributions which are similarly large.

A single SD Card which can hold 'everything' is useful, even if not currently cost effective, or the best way.

Yes, I have around 240GB of music (mostly flac).
Video takes much more.

If you have such a large video collection, its more efficient/cheap to spread it over *several* SD-cards.

And a better idea in general.
Should you lose one of the cards, you don't lose your entire collection.

Still kinda cool tho..

I once got an overdraft to pay for 512kb of ram.. probably more storage in a disposable audio b'day card these days..

Know what you mean. Spent days arguing for a 10Mb hard drive to make compiles quicker...

In 2002 when I built my dual Opteron-240 system, the 2GB of ECC RAM for it cost $500. (That was about 25% of the total system cost.)

Yep, I once got a £500 bank loan to pay for a 10MB hard disk for my BBC Micro. Now I can buy a 6000 times larger SSD for under 2.5% of that price that weighs a few grams instead of a few Kg!

In 1992 the Teradata corporation built the first 1 terabyte database machine for Wal-Mart. I can't find out what they paid for it!

I interviewed with them about that time. As far as I can tell that was built from lots of Intel 368 boards. Didn't get the job. What do I know about databases.

Edit: Yes I can, a few years later they sold a new model of the system:

"Reuters agreed to pay NCR $50.7 million to expand its database management capacities, creating a 500 gigabyte data warehouse valued at over $76 million."

See picture here (It's too big to attach):

That's big for those days. I have used Teradata systems, but was generally unimpressed.

"all games"? how many of those would actually run on an RPI?

Yes modern games, such as counter-strike, use an extremely large amount of storage, but they don't run on an RPI, do they?!

just because a RPI has more storage doesn't make it a faster computer!

IMHO 1T cards have no place on an RPI, and are an idiocy.

I'd rather use 2TB HDD for my RPi, than an expensive (and may be unreliable) 1TB microSD.

Given the storage required for modern games, 1TB would hold about 50 of them. That's a far cry from "all".

Very much agreed. As I've noted on a number of occasions, in general, when I want more than 32GB, I shift to SSD or HDD. I do have one Pi that has a 64GB SD card, but it's a "portable" system (i.e. runs from a powerbank in normal use).
