Can Pi 4 replace a laptop for streaming?

Wed Jul 03, 2019 3:03 pm

Currently I use a laptop plugged into my TV to do all streaming things
- netflix
- prime
- crave
- live sports streams
- free tv/movies streams, etc

Would purchasing a pi 4 and hooking it up to my TV give me all of these features? I have never owned a pi and I don't know if it has Chrome, or what OS it runs really.

Thanks.

Well, Thats a good question. A raspberry pi 4 is *almost* like a pc ,except that the processor is a bit slower being clocked at 1.5 ghz....I would say you can manage with a 2gb ram or 4gb ram(recommended for streaming) version of pi 4

Hope it runs (which it wont)

Many use the Raspbian OS , but you have ton of other options for OS. With raspbian, you get a browser called chromium which is good as chrome. BTW, most raspberry os are based on linux , which means it is free..

That sounds promising - but I did a little research (aka Googling) and saw some issues people were having with Netlifx and Prime - suddenly it stopped working. Something about HTML5, widevine, chromium not being good enough, etc. Are these still issues?

Many web streaming services use Widevine Digital Rights Management DRM, the Raspberry Pi is not classed as a Secure Platform so Widevine can not be included in the Raspbian Buster download.

Vivaldi Browser offer a workaround for Widevine:

Hmm, ok, so it mostly sounds like you're saying yes, I can stream Netflix, Prime, flash/html5, etc, to my TV using the new pi 4

By all means buy a Pi if you have an interest in computing/programming/electronics, but may I ask? What's wrong with your current setup?

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Answer is yes, but do not take my word for it... AFAIK, while the hardware of raspi4 is good, there is some slowness caused by the latest version(buster) of Raspbian... As you may be knowing, its not been so long since raspi4 is released and the OS will take time to get the most out of the available hardware..
Eventually, The OS will be opimised to achieve better results
